I'm looking to add to my Jeep collection of one and get a J truck. I need a truck to haul wood and building supplies and so on, ( that is what I'm telling my wife), but I also want to use it for wheeling and a ride to work when the waggy is down. I can't afford much so I've been looking from early 60's to mid 70's but there seems to be so many variations I'm not sure what to be really looking for or are they all good?
Any favorites out here and are there any links that give some kind of history for J trucks and there make up, like what models had what engines and drive trains?
Thanks for the help, Wag one

I'm working on a website for just that purpose but it's still a long way off. What engine do you want? power steering and brakes? how about modern conviences? Grill, packages, trim, GVW?
I'm for the pre '70 rhino front and 327, what kind of out put do you want for your truck(torque vs. HP vs. MPG)? acording to my '66 service manual you can get any thing from 4000GVW to 8600GVW. it also says the 327 V-8 has more HP and torque, around 250HP and 330lb-ft vs. the straight 6 230 with 140HP and 210ld-ft.
hope this helps

My Jeep mechanic has a very nice 74 J-10 model with a 401 and new Carb hes is asking $2000. It has very little rust or body damage and would be an excellent fixer-upper. I already have 2 pickups, a wagoneer, 67 Mustang and a mini-van or I would add this one to my own collection.
Anyway we are about an hour south of Atlanta, Ga. and his number is 770 567 1229

I guess I wouldn't mind giving up milage for horse power, seeing it would be a second vehicle. What do you know about these buick 350's? There is a 68 with a buick 350,3 speed with no bed for $800.00. Also see a 71 J-4000 with a buick 350,have to call for price.

I have a Buick 350 in my 68 Gladiator & I love it. Of corse It has a few up grades.
(spent around $2000.00 in engine parts & machine shop).I done all of the work my self.
Could have got equal parts for Chevy 350 around $500.00. If you want a torque monster
It is a real stump puller.

I love my 73, but I would have to go with a 74-79 J-20 with a 4-speed, becuse that way you would not have QT, and it has big axles and a granny low first gear, which rules off-road, look for a 401 in it and you have a bulletproof truck, and here is a site with all the info you want http://home.off-road.com/~jseries

I would go with 74-79, the body steel is thicker than the newer rigs, and interchangeability better than older rigs.
