I have a 1979 Cherokee with QT. I am wondering if anyone has heard of removing the front driveshaft to get better mileage on longer trips? I think I would need to turn the emergency drive on so the rear axle would get power. Let me know if this works or is a bad thing to do.

It will make a difference if you have full time 4-wheel(at least it on a buddys chevy).

Not a good idea if you still have a full time QT. Running without the front shaft will burn the t/c up. :(

You can run the Q-Trac with only one driveshaft, however it does have to be in E-Drive. In E-Drive Clutch Cones are not driving either output, they are locked out. However to gain MPG this would not be worth the time of the effort.

LOL... I stand corrected. smile.gif Now would this be the GREEN QT that will allow this operation? :D

Sigh....and I'm going to have to run one in the '79 behind a 700R4. No levers on the floor. :( Such is life. But it will be GREEN..to match the engine. smile.gif

Thanks for the comments, I think I may try it out anyway; would running with e-drive on be harmful to the transfer case for a long trip?

nd, Don't plan on gaining any mileage if that is your goal. Unless you have lockout hubs on the front then the front axles, etc will still be spinning. I think the front driveshaft spinning is less of a drag on the drivetrain than the front end. Also bear in mind the extra wear and tear on the clutches in the tcase which are not replaceable in terms of going down and buying them. J20
