View Full Version : Is this a 'Control Module' problem?

88 GW was running fine, sputtering a bit when cold started, but it's been really cold in the North East and she's tempermental anyways.
Turns over fine, strong battery, but won't even hint at catching.
Tried drygas, carb cleaner, starting fluid, gas into the carb, wire dryer... nothing.
Guy from the most reputable garage in the city, came to tow it, but couldn't in the snow. Said that it was getting fuel, but the problem was the control mod. Guy at local Napa leaned that way too. It's a $100 part and is not returnable. What do you all think. I'm most upset that we had 6 inches of snow and I had to ride shotgun in a wrangler on the trails that weekend.
Thanks

Sounds like you have plenty of fuel. I'd guess the module is bad and that's why you don't have any spark. Have you checked prices for modules other than the $100 one? I'm sure someone on here will have a place for you to get one.

If this is the Duraspark module for 88 GW with the black plastic 4 way connector and a black plastic 2 way connector? The connectors should have green silicone seals to keep dirt out of the connectors? If this is the one, I can get them here in Georgia for about $45. I priced one just last week.
If you want I can buy you one here and ship it to you for my cost plus shipping. Just let me know.

Before you go out and drop $45-100 for a new module, get a multimeter and check the resistance at your wire connecter going to the dist. I know it's a long shot, but mine had the exact same probs, turned out to have too much resistance. I don't have a fix for it, cause my beast fixed it herself.

I paid 18.00 for mine here at Auto Zone. I was a little worried about it since it was so cheap, it has not failed me yet. I can not imagin paying 100 for it.

Called AutoZone
$50 bucks and I can bring mine in to have it tested first. Thanks all. I really don't know a darn thing about Jeeps. Baby steps, right?

People keep noting the differences in prices of control modules; realize there are two distinct modules for our FSJ's:
* Old-style with Oval plastic Ford-style connectors. These you can pick up new for under $20, since they were used on every Ford and Jeep up until the mid-80's. These were used up to '85/'86 or so.
* New-style with rectangular/square GM Weatherpak-style connectors (with the green silicone seals). These are the $50-$100 units only used on the '87-'91 FSJ models.
The control units for both are identical; the only difference is the wiring. If I could get ahold of some bulk components (the Ford-style harness-end plugs and the square Weatherpak connector), I could solder up a harness to enable the use of the old-style box on the newer FSJ's, but I don't know of a source for them.

If you can send me a picture of the 2 connectors I'll try to find you a source for them. I think I know where to find them in bulk in SLC, but I don't know what they look like.

Don't forget the coil!
It's a typical achilles heel of the FSJ family . . . maybe time for a TFI upgrade ;)

I've got them in stock. They are GM fuel injection connectors. The 2 ways are very easy to find at some auto parts stores. The 4 ways are more difficult but I have about 50. I get them from www.waytekwire.com. (http://www.waytekwire.com.)
If you had these connectors, you can buy the less expensive $15 module for pre-1987 GWs and and cut off the connectors. Then splice on the GM weatherpak terminals and you've saved about $30.

Yea I learned this the hard way, I have been running a Ford module for over 10yrs. I could not find a replacement so I just spliced the old connectors to a new module and have not had any problems since. I don't know why they went with none standard connectors other than to try to force you to go with the factory module. ;)
