I have looked through as many post as I can find trying to find out if anyone has done this: I want to convert my manual tailgate to electric. Can you simply install a motor and key switch from an exitsting electric tailgate or do you have to buy the whole tailgate and if that is the case are all tailgates made equal hinge alignment lock alignment etc. 1970 wagoneer would be the canidate Thanks

You'll need the wiring, from fusebox to the rear, relays, and easier to just get a tailgate with all that stuff already on it.
To Gary :

Thanks for the Replies. I already have the jeep pre-wired to the back with 5 extra power wires and switch wires to the dash for reasons such as this. GEMBOX Crown has the Elec to Man. conversions only, I think not a Man. to Elec conversion. If I did get another tailgate that was electric would everything line up such as hinges tailgate lock and window track :D

I have the manual window mechanisms as well as the electric. I see no difference in the two units. I would opt to swap in the electric complete with regulator about 8 screws looks like. I also have a 70 with electric rear window but I can't get it down at the moment. I was going to check that to see if it was the same as the manual setup I have on the shop floor. ;)

Thanks Crazzy_Jeepman!! My waggy looks exactly like the photos of yours! I have one other question that should probably be on another thread but, how hard is it to swap in the D44 frnt and rear including the brake booster. Are there any hang ups or is it a pretty straight foward swap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the ignorance here, but WHY do you want to switch from manual to electric?
Wires, switches and motors break. I ain't broke my hand yet, almost cut it to the bone trying to get my **** electric tailgate window down though...

I agree with Dan. Unless your manual mechanism is busted, don't bother going to electric. They're a headache.

Hey, if you want to sell your manual mechanism, I might be interested in buying it.
