Well, I picked up that 1977 Cherokee today for $325. Interior is shot, small hole in floor on drivers side, needs rear window and rt front fender is dented. It badly needs a tune up but seems to run ok once I replaced a spark plug wire that was arking. Has a 4 speed T-18 (?) and D-20 transfer case. It goes into 4 hi just fine but cant get it into 4-lo. I think the linkage may be out of adjustment. It drives fairly decent on the highway. Now I can stop beating up on my 1988 GW, it is too nice to use offroad. Let the fun begin!!

Congrats on your new FSJ!!! Did you try to back up and then shift out of hi to lo. I know that inorder to shift out of 4lo I have to put her in reverse for a few feet, then shift. Maybe it works the other way around. Does your T-18 have a granny low first gear? If so your lucky and got a T-18a!!! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Bryan, congrats on the new money pit...I mean Chero! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
You got a good deal guy.
"Insert shameless begging here": if you ever get tired of it or frustrated and want to dump it I'd be interested in the entire packgage. I'm only a couple of hundred miles from you and could use the entire set up except the body and frame. "End of shameless begging".
I'll be off this forum for a month or two after tonight so keep my email address in case you ever want to bail out http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
You definitely have a good start for one tough 4x4. Good luck and have fun. BTW see if it'll climb Badger Mt. My old 50 Willys would but I was too scared to actually drive it. I walked next to it and jumped back in when it got to the top http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif Of course that was 28 years ago and may not even be a legal place to play any more http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif

I played w/the transfer case for just a few minutes, I will try your suggestions to see if they work. Thanks Brian.

Joe, I'll keep you in mind if I decide to get rid of it. For now I think I'll keep it and work on this winter, unless you have a jeep pickup you want to trade/sell, I REALLY need a pickup truck & a jeep J10 or J20 would fit the bill nicely. Badger mountain has some very steep trails on it, I played around on it in a 1998 f150 4x4 I used to have and there are some places that had me ready to bail out. I havnt tried it with my 1988 GW yet though.

That may be a possibilty by next summer or so Bryan. I've got a pretty decent 73 J-4000(heavy 1/2 T, D-60-2 semi-floater, AT and PT/QT etc ) I may be getting rid of by then if my search for a "stock" 78 J-20 pans out.
Yeah I'm "still" looking for the one somebody's grandpa owned and never drove blah blah blah...so it ain't gonna happen tomorrow http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
