well here's the story:

i have 3.55 gears (woohoo!) and can tear down brick walls on a whim.

however, this SUX for gas mileage. i'm getting about 8 mpg at speeds under 65 - i don't even want to try going 70 or over. i figure 8 mpg is about right for my current setup of 3.55s and 30" tires, so i'm not too concerned about that.

my engine has also been totally desmogged except for EGR and PCV; not a problem tho, cuz TN is not an emissions state. i do, however, smell some gas coming from my exhaust. i don't have catalytic converters, and my current exhaust consists of straight pipes hooked up to stock manifolds and then running to some mufflers; no more, no less. should i lean out the carb just a bit, or is a little gas smell (nothing too bad, kinda like when you run high octane on a low compression engine) normal for an engine with no cat and nearly no emissions junk?

BTW, i came up with a crazy idea for an exhaust system... how about cutting the log off of a stock exhaust manifold and saving the connectors. then weld some 2" pipe to the connectors, run the pipe upwards, out of holes cut in the hood. then run an elbow bend at the top of each pipe (keep water and mud out). how's that sound for a mad-max straight pipe FSJ setup? :D :D :D

i might just try it on the chero, since that'll be a trail only rig.

8 mpg is low for 3.54's and 30's as I have 4.10's, 33's and cam and 4v and get a steady 13 mpg from my 65 with the 360. And I have a heavy foot with an automatic. Millerluck gets 15 to 18 with his 360 4v combo (less gear).
You don't say what carb but is sounds like a blown power valve and/or too big of main jets.

motorcraft 2150, i believe. i forgot to ask the PO if he rejetted the carb....

so should i just go all out and get a new intake/carb, or should i get a carb rebuild kit?

thanks smile.gif

go for the intake and 4v as after it is done you will wonder why you did not do it sooner.
