how many bearings in the hub of an '82 wagoneer with stock d44? if more than one , are they different sizes. NAPA sells two bearings for my axle, one big and one a little smaller, but their computer is unclear as to wether you need them both or if it's one or the other. any experience will be appreciated.

you have two bearings in the hub. You have a large inner bearing and a small outer bearing. Generally it is a good pratice to replace both inner and outer bearings. First check the old bearings for any blueing on the rollers of the bearings and the bearing races as well. Don't forget to get the dust seal that goes on the back of the hub, you will ruin the old one ( have to pull it to get the inner bearing out).

There is also a roller bearing inside the spindle. At least grease it if you don't replace it.

It's a PIA, but it can be done with a little slide hammer that has a hook on the end. If it makes you feel better, I couldn't even get a machine shop that wanted to give it a shot. In exasperation, I gave up and figured out how to do it myself. :D
