I have an 86 GW which has many issues. The one that concerns me the most involves it's inability to idle after driving at high speed. When I drive around town at 40 MPH or less it is fine, but after I come off the freeway it dies when I come to a stop. I am not exactly an "Automotive expert" but I have a feeling it has some thing to do with the carburetor.
Any suggestions?

does it start right back up again? do you have to keep your foot on the gas part way to keep it running when its warm? how does it start when warm? more info would be nice if you can.

probably needs carb rebuilt tho.

Does it restart right away... or you have to keep cranking..... as to reprime the fuel pump. (weak fuel pump) ..... can you drive past 75 for a long time

If it does not restart.... or never.. it could be a dying module....

Has anyone a better guess?

it could be as simple as a vaccum leak, leaning the engine.... check all those vaccum hose and make sure they are not cracked or loose

Bonne chance

Please post the entire history of your life and that of your nearest relative. Confess your addiction to Jeepdom, how you got this way and how you expect to recover. :D ;) After that, fill us in on what engine you have, which carburetor and what you have done to try to fix it. Does it have any other symptoms? Might be as simple as vapor lock. Where does your fuel line run relative to your exhaust manifold?

Ok, I guess a little more info would be a good idea. I bought the GW because I liked the wood sides. The guy I bought it from told me it needed a couple of new seals to stop oil leaks. I believed him and $3500 worth of new engine later it was a daily driver. A hard lesson learned.
Anyway I drove it for about a year and then garaged it for about six months. Now i have some time on my hand so I would like to try to repair the major problems and turn it into a hunting/skiing vehicle. But I want to try to keep it as original as possible.
As for the idle problem. When it dies I have to hold the gas pedal and crank for 10-20 seconds to get it to start again.
It starts Ok when cold and as long as I don't go on the freeway it runs fine. It has a V-8 360 in it and as far as I know the stock carb is in it. As for other symptoms, the 4-wheel drive doesn't work, the a/c doesn't work, it wanders on the road, etc.
One thing I should let you know though is than when the engine was replaced the Cat Converter was removed and the ports for it were welded over.
Is this enough info?

I'm gonna say fuel pump. Freeway driving = sustained high RPM drains carburetor bowl and weak fuel pump can't refill it fast enough before it stalls. Cranking at stop refills bowl, engine starts and runs OK at lower RPM city driving because fuel pump can keep up. There are ways to check fuel pump pressure and output, but if you don't have the tools you can't prove it. Fuel pumps are cheap and a new one for that old of a rig never hurts.

sticky egr? ez enough to check, plug the hose and see if the problem goes away. if not at least you've eliminated that possibility
