View Full Version : What'd I do to my MSD ignition? Maybe I need some install tips?

I opted to replace my factory distibutor with a MSD Pro-Billet. I did this at the same time that I tore the top and front apart to install a new cam. I already had the MSD-6A installed with Holley 2D Projection. I put it all back together and tried to start it up. No spark! Looked at the instructions and it said something about not using the white wire out of the MSD box if you are hooked up to a mag? I think this might be something that is in the new distributor. I did have it hooked up to a wire coming out of the factory ignition box (don't ask me why, but it used to work), but I clipped it and it still wouldn't start. For those of you who know what I'm talking about: Did I mess my ignition box up, or where should I look next?

Yeah you only use one of the factory coil wires(I think the positive)and it hooks up to the red input wire on the MSD. The white wire is not used and either is the other factory coil wire. I don't think that would fry the MSD if you hooked it up but I could be wrong.
You only hook up the red and white wires both to the coil wires if you're running a points ignition.

I've got the 6A box, Blaster 2 coil and the new Pro-Billet distributor. The way it was originally installed (by a shade tree scammer), the factory ignition box appeared to still be part of it. I would like to completely eliminate the factory box. It can be done, right?

gwinn, here is the wiring for the MSD: Connect the factory positive coil wire to the red input wire of the MSD, DO NOT connect the factory negative coil wire to anything, just tape it off, also you do not use the white input wire for the MSD either. Connect the orange MSD coil wire to the positive of the coil and the black MSD coil wire to the negative. Connect the distributor output from the MSD to the distributor. And of course positive and ground to the battery.
The factory Duraspark is no longer part of the ignition system once the factory distributor harness has been disconnected. I left my Duraspark distributor harness unplugged by the distributor so I could use the Duraspark again if I needed a back up. To switch to the Duraspark just plug the distributor harness back into the distributor and plug the factory coil wires back into the coil. You can just yank the Duraspark but I left it in as a backup.
I hope this helps.
