Did the 1980 J10's come with quadratrac as an option? I am looking at one now and I don't know what the q-trac lever looks like. There is a cheesy looking lever to the drivers side of the trans hump. The only other explantion is this truck was previously owned by a handicapped person and it is a mod so he could use the 4x4. A little help please. :confused:

Most all 80's FSJ's used that "cheesy looking lever to the drivers side of the trans hump" very few used an actual stick shifter. J10 being an 80's would not have Q-Trac. NP229, NP228 NP219, NP208, would be the choices of T-Cases, all use same shifter.

In '80-'82, the NP219 was designated the "Quadratrac" case. It was available on the '80 pickups, but the NP208 Commandtrac also used the cheesy little lever. Best way to determine what you've got is to read the numbers on the round tag on the back of the case.

Thanks for the input. The 80 J10 I had did not have the little lever. It had a regular t-case handle to the left of the shifter.

Yes the J10's and some Cherokees did have an actual stick shifter with the T176 and T5 manual transmisions. I even seen one with an automatic, but that is real rare.

As Bob said the full-time np219 (also named quadratrac) was optional in 80-82 and only with the AT and the 219 shifter is on top of the tunnel like any conventional tcase shifter. The other tcase would be the part-time np208(includes unlocking hubs). If the 208 is behind an AT it'll have the little goofy lever off the side of the tunnel. If the 208 came behind an MT it'll have a conventional shifter through the top of the tunnel.
The 3rd digit of your VIN will tell you what came in it from the factory.
D=AT/208
E=AT/219
M=MT/208

"(includes unlocking hubs). If the 208 is behind an AT it'll have the little goofy lever off the side of the tunnel."

Thanks. That's exactly what this one has. Sorry for my ignorance I had never seen the goofy handle. It doesn't seem like it would hold up well am I worrying about nothing?

Thanks again.

It should be fine. The only other rigs that used a variation of that handle were the 83-91 FSJ's with the 228/229 tcase but on those it was just used for H/L range selection but pretty much the same goofy lever ;)

Hey dennis,
Since you bought my J10 and had an accident shortly after and sold it and now your buying another FSJ, I would have to say that you have been bitten by the FSJ BUG.....LOL whats the matter you can't get the old J10 out of your mind?Thats what happened to me.....Sold my 80 missed it so much bought another one.

But anyway, the 80 j10 had the stick on the hump because of it being manual transmission. The automatics used the flag shifter on the side of the hump. You shoudln't be concerned about breaking it, as long as if it doesn't move you don't force it you will be alright. if it has the 208 case and you have the front axle hubs locked, you can shift it easier when rolling slightly.
