View Full Version : coil is getting hot and i have to manually turn key to "run" position from start

i just replaced just about every ignition component i could think of in my 79 cherokee(360) but my coil is getting hot while running as well as my key not kicking back to the run position after starting. my ignition module is not getting hot though. any answers out there?

Sounds just like a faulty ignition switch. Better check it, before you cook the coil.

Like steamer suggested check your ignition switch at the base of the column.Also check the rod that connects the key switch to the lower switch ,that could be bunding.Not only could you fry your coil but your starter as well.

And if that rod breaks like mine did the key wont operate and you wont be able to start it. You can do a bypass and get it home though. I have a diagram of how to do that if you need it. Good Luck

Your coil normally gets less than 12 volts through a resistance wire, however when in the "start" mode it gets a full 12 volts. If your switch wqas sticking at all in the start mode then this would explain your coil getting hot, by recieving too much voltage. This would tend to confirm the ignition switch diagnosis.

thank you very much for these words of advice. i do have a new ignition switch to put in it and i think that rod linkage is bent.any suggestions on where to get a new rod? the junkyard? and how do they get removed?
