what rear end?

Hello all I have a 1988 grand wagoneer with a 360 engine and 727 trans. How do I know which rear end I have? I am only asking because I plan on swapping in a 700r4 and many of you have warned that if the gearing is too low then the overdrive will only make matters worse. I think you all said avoid doing it if I have 2:21 gear ratio or something like that. How do I go about finding out which gearset I have in my rearend?

It's a D44 with either stock 2.72 gears or optional 3.31's and neither are OD friendly. On perfectly flat ground you may get away with OD and the 3.31's but it's an expensive gamble to find out. I've run OD with 3.54's and it's marginal at best in the western states.

there's probably a tag on your rear end that says. it should be on one side of you cover.
