Hey, just bragging that I finally did something to my Jeep. I feel out of the loop when I haven't held a wrench to her in over a week.
Installed a electronic fuel pump. Now I'm wondering why the gas filter has a return to the tank. Any guesses? This makes the pump run all the time. I have a switch installed so it will only be used when I think I'll need it. Hopefully this will rid the vapor lock issue.
Installed a auxiliary fuel line at the out side of the fuel filter. The hose is long enough to go into my lawnmower gas tank to fill it up. No more runs to the gas station to get a gallon of gas. I'll pump it out right there in my yard. It works awesomely.
Those driving lights that I installed, oh about 7 months ago. Finally hooked them up. Used the factory brackets/harness/switch and was surprised that it worked. They won't come on unless the headlights are on and they go out with the high beams.
With all that said and done I fried the battery playing with all the electrical stuff so it's been on the charger all night.
Just had to tell someone and thought if anyone would listen it would be my fellow FSJeepers. Have a great day. I'm off to CPR/First Aid instructor school now. One more Friday left after this one. Later.

I know what you mean about feeling guilty if you don't work on the jeep for awhile. I am going to go out today and attempt to start on repairing the rear quarter panels.

fuel return line is because pump puts out more fuel than carb can burn, even at full throttle.

My impression was that its a vapor return line, so its probably restricted somewhere. If it is, then the resistance to flow in it will be pretty high.
Most mechanical pumps don't create enough pressure to push the carbs fuel inlet needles off their seats. Particulalry as they are rpm dependent.
Now. depending on the electric pump you've installed, you might want to use a pressure regulator. Some pumps have it built in, and yes they do have a fuel return line. In theory, I think a fuel return line could go back to the feed line, instead of the tank.
Some interesting questions you have raised !
Anyone have the Mopar performance books on Jeeps? Since an electric pump is often chosen for competition, I'm thinking there might be some ideas in there.
PS. I can't wait to get back to working on my waggy! Gots to finish helping my friend with his D**n D**ge van first though. Someone totally mucked up the pulleys and brackets, so we had to go to the boneyard, but now have to do some fabbing for the a/c compressor. I hate vans, and a/c too. Grrrrrr.

The return line is indeed the keep the fuel moving to help prevent vapor lock.
Your driving light switch works the way it does to meet federal lighting standards. The driving lights are considered highbeam headlights and you only are allowed to run set or high beams at time. (this, like most pollution laws are behaviour modifaction laws and for the most part make no real sense)

Jeep in their infinite wisdom decided that the fog lamps should only be on with low beam lights. And for the most part when you are driving in fog, most of the time that produces the best results, visibility wise. The only way around this is rewire the fog lights switch from a hot wire (12V) so that they can be switched of and on directly. They are presently wired so that they only have power when low beams are on. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif Oh well if these things were perfect we would not have anything to do. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif
On a normal Jeep the fuel filter has one inlet and two outlets, the center outlet goes to the carburetor. The other outlet goes to line that eventually goes back to the fuel tank. The filter us supposed to be installed so that the outlet that goes back to the tank is in the 12 o-clock position (that outlet should over the line going to the carb) this arrangement is supposed to return excess fuel and vapors to the tank which in theory eases the vapor lock problem.
I like your idea for lawn mower gas but, I think that if your filter and return line to the tank were hooked up properly the vapor lock problem would go away with the stock fuel pump. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
By the way great job on the ignition upgrade kudos to you for that. I am contemplating doing that myself. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/cool.gif

Thanks for the replies Jeepers.
Yes u made me look but just as I thought, the fuel filter return is in the 12 o'clock position. This didn't stop it from VL so my thery is that if I feel a VL situation coming on I will flip the e-pump swith to the on position and the VL will go away. Yet to see if that will work but I havn't had it VL since Elk hunting last year so it may be a while.
It sounded like I was concerned about the driving lights. The way they work, but I knew that that was normal.
The e-pump I installed is a demand pump that should only work when the pressure is low enough for it to run. That don't work to well when the fuel continues to curculate back to the tank. It's turned off most of the time anyway so this is not an issue.
Now all I have to do is hange a Gas for Sale sign on my Wag. Lets see any takers at $2.25 per gallon? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
