View Full Version : Poor idle after TFI upgrade

I just finished TFI upgrade and tooh it out for a spin this afternoon. It started as usual but as soon as it warmed up it wouldn't idle, I could keep it running in drive with my foot on the throttle but as soon as I let off it goes down to a rough idle. When cool it seems to run good. Any ideas? I found the wires to the carb vent solenoid broken so I repaired those but I hooked them up exactly as I found them. I don't think that is the problem 'cause it runs good when it is cold. Need help!

This is happening to me too!! Only it wasn't becuase of a TFI upgrade. My truck will not idle warm... Its weird... Vacuum problem?

1. Do you have an EGR? Do you have it routed to manifold or ported vacuum? I assume that you do have an EGR, and that it's routed thru the EGR CTO. When the CTO warms up and opens the vac. circuit it could be opening the EGR if you've got it routed to manifold instead of ported vacuum. That will stall the engine or come near doing so.
2. If you have full emissions equipment, one of the CTO's could be defective.
These are just a couple of possibilities that come to mind. I imagine others have ideas.

There is a timing difference between the stock and the tfi caps so it will have to be adjusted. Also with a hotter spark you MAY have to adjust the fuel mixture on the carb.

My EGR system is good and I don't think that the CTO would go bad just like that.
jeepbob- Thanks for the info. I'll check both. I guess I need to get a timing light.

One other thing!! You can wire the coil backwards, if you don't pay close attention, and end up with far less "juice", than if wired correctly. That'll account for the poor idle quality
You can look down in the connector for the TFI coil, and you'll see the polarity marked inside it. If you use the connnector that goes with the coil, it's harder to do, but a momentary lapse can raise interesting problems.
Jason, I'd take a look at the CTO's, air diverters, and the EGR, in your case.

Good idea, I'll check that also. I wired the coil black to green and orange to red but I will check the voltage with the key on.

Bob's right on with the mixture idea. When I did mine I had to adjust the timing about 2 degree's and she wanted die at idle. Was a simple idle mixture adjustment for me.
