Whelp, my girl must know she's going to be ditched for three plus years, cuz she sure is acting up...
Here's the latest: Yesterday was driving at around 70 MPH. Lost all top end. Slowed down, found out, I don't have 2nd or 3rd anymore! Crawled home in first...
Did some checking today, the linkage looks fine... Can't figure it out, only got first gear.

Does it shift out of first and act like it's in nuetral? Or does it just not shift out of first at all? I saw in another thread that you've been leaking fluid for a while, right? I know that you've checked the fluid level and stuff, but how long has it been since you've changed the fluid and filter. It's possible that your tranny is just gummed up and that's keeping 2nd and 3rd from engaging. But to be honest, every time I've had this problem, it's resulted in a new transmission. I hope that this isn't the case with you!

Know that feeling!! Driving new Wag home from KCMO last week and lost third gear after about 40 miles. After the Wag sat for a little bit it worked fine-except now it slips. Tranny does okay until you drive it about 35-40 miles then there goes third again! Gonna try changing fluid & filter & adjusting bands. Hope that works! But I guess that's a Jeep for you (break it, fix it, break it, fix it!!) :D Hope you figure out what is wrong with yours & it doesn't break the bank!! :D

I changed the filter and fluid probably less than 500 miles ago, it was in June/July...
I've only got a month left here, so I'm debating how much time to put into her.
I was leaking oil pretty bad, but I got that fixed in August. I just needed a new pan gasket...
I suppose I could try filter/fluid again. It wasn't that hard last time...
It won't shift into 2nd or 3rd at all. Just revves high in 1st. Parking, Reverse, and Neutral are all fine...

I had a t400 do this in a 68 chev once. It would stay in first, and not shift, but when i let off the gas it would "free wheel" or feel like it was in nuetral, until I gave it enough gas for the rpm's to catch up to the roadspeed. It was a cracked vacuum line on the side of the tranny, it's real short, like several inches, goes in and out on the side, sorry don't remember which side.

you might want to rermove the govenor from the trans and check the gear on it turn the gov upside down and compress the fly wheights and watch to see if the shaft in the middle moves up and down freeley get a can of laquar thinner and wash the gov real good then watch the inside shaft it will most fix the problem

Before you do all of that, check the vacume supply line. Mine had a rubber line that fell off right where it attached to the tranny on the right side. Check that whole line. Mine acted exacly like that. I reattached the line and it was fine.

I had an automatic do that once and it was the gear on the govenor shaft. $60 fixed at trans shop

I concur with jeepguzzi.
Last week my Chief exhibited the exact same symptoms, and I soon discovered the short rubber hose from the modulator to the steel vacuum line had split. Quick, cheap and easy to fix for a change smile.gif

Two devices regulate the shifting on the T400 (AFAIK). The governor, and the vacumn modulator. My brother had a 68 Pontiac that had governor trouble. Wouldn't shift out of first no matter what he did. He repaired the governor and all was well.
Check those two units.

Governor. It happened to mine and the tailshaft was bent, which took out the gear on the governor. I replaced the tailshaft and the gov and it shifts fine now.
