View Full Version : REAL WOOD PANELS?
WAGON KING

Please don't laugh me of the site, but I was wondering if anyone has tried teak veneer to replace the fake woodgrain panels on their wagon. I was thinking of floating the panel in a frame of teak with the bottom piece of molding having holes along its length to allow water to escape. Again, don't throw me out because of a crazy idea. I'm still kinda new here and you guys will never know how much the info on this site helps a non-mechanic like me. I've had my 87 GW for about 12 years and some of the wood decals are looking kinda rough. Love the site!

Hey, Welcome to the Fam!
I haven't tried using real wood because I think that it would be too much maintenance to keep it looking good. Even teak turns grey after so long, especially if it dries out. But I say go for it! give it a shot, you might start a trend and I bet that it would look sharp as all heck. I considered using real wood on the Wag I'm building, but because of maintenance and durability reasons, I've decided that I'm going to "paint" the wood on the side of my truck with a fake wood roller stencil from Home Depot, then frame it in fake wood particle board molding. So again, I encourage you to give it a shot, weither you think it looks good or not, post some pics so we can take a look and see if we want to try it too! Take it easy King!

when the body on my willys rotted away, i replaced it with 1/4" ac plywood stained walnut. wood. door panels, rear 1/4s and t/g were ply edged in oak. it required a yearly coat of spar varnish to keep looking nice.

I do alot of woodwork and I'm sure you could. Woody's were all wood. Would take alot of time and you would have to be tedious in your effort to keep a nice finish on them, marine grade polyurethane would work and after the finish dried you can wax it with carnuba car wax.

I've thought about this as well. Assuming I ever get the jeep licensed
And about crazy ideas. No one here would "kick you off the boards" for one. The whole idea of the FSJ is to be crazy! :D
