I have a few questions.
First, my jeep, it's an 83 Wagoneer with a 360. I purchased it a week ago. When i brought it home i found it to be leaking tranny fluid from the dust cover. I tore it down to find the torque converter burnt and destroyed. That is where i'm at right now
1. Is this a lockup or non-lockup transmission?
2. will the torque converter from any other vehicle work with this?
3. I found a reman. converter at www.tpcconverters.com (http://www.tpcconverters.com) for $93 shipped. Has anyone dealt with them before?
4. Anything i should do while i have it apart?
and finally.
5. I may get the hookup on some humvee tires, 36", and was wondering what i would need to do to use these tires? and if anyone might be interested in getting a set of these tires let me know.
6. Are these tires worth my time?

thank you very much!

also, are there any other vehicles i can rob a radiator from for it?(good thing i didn't pay much for this jeep, $350 smile.gif

Welcome to the Forum! Curious as to how you can tell the Torque is burnt up? I would be thinking you have a trans problem, or a shot Trans altogether, though I am not a tranny person, just was currious as to how you could tell.
Humvee tires are on a 16.5 rim so no you can not use them unless you find a 16.5 rim for six stud axles. I am not sure they exist.

as far as the tranny, it looks like it has been replaced recently. the transfer case and engine are fairly greasey and the tranny is clean. I'm thinking they previous owner installed a tranny and left the old converter and that caused the front seal to go out. at least that is what i'm hoping smile.gif
the converter is black and smells like burnt fluid, plus i took it to a tranny shop and they checked it and said it was dead.

thanks for your input on the tires.

I've never seen a rebuilt tranny with an old converter. That's the biggest mistake you could possibly make with a rebuild!!! The previous owner, I mean. Well, if that burnt contaminated fluid got through the tranny, there could be some future problems there. I like to replace the convereter when I even swap in a used tranny!

Second, Where are you and these tires at? (pic's)
Third, Sorry I can't help with the tranny thing either but ggsmikie will set you straight. $93 seems like alot for a reman converter but I could be wrong on that.

1: its a non-lockup

2: not sure, but I think its a standard tf727 torque converter, but dont hol me tot his ;)

3: nope i havent

4: make sure the trans itself is ok, maybe change the filter.

5: a 4" lift with LOTS of trimming will "fit them". But I say get a 6" or go SOA and then just trim the back, and maybe a littlein front.

6: I say no. Hummer tires ride terribly and arent all that good. plus inding wheels to match your 6 on 5.5 axles will be next to inpossible, unless you go custom.

I like the Hummer tires in the 36" variety. Don't like the radial 37". The good thing about them is that you can find them used for cheap, making a great set of trail tires. That is if you plan to beat them hard. But as previously stated, they are 16.5 rims. I'd be interested in another set depending on their location.

whats all this noise about burnt this and burnt that ?????? if the converter is burnt then it has ballooned and there wont be any paint on it the snout should be blue and the snout will look like a small rainbow i have seen this before what happens is some one smokes their trans and puts a rebuilt in and forgets(does not)to flush the trans cooler at start up the cooler plugs the converter turns cherry red (like the first time you loaded a wood stove)it instantly burns the paint off of the converter so you know what it did to the front seal of the trans all the fluid is burnt and stinks now comes the dilima you can replace the converter and rebuild the trans FLUSH THE COOLER or you can replace the converter FLUSH THE COOLER and flush the trans and run the trans as it is..............i know all about this i did it many years ago i changed the converter FLUSHED THE COOLER flushed the trans and ran the trans for 2000,000 miles

Thank you all very much for the info and opinions.
I know that is a big mistake to put an old converter and new tranny together, but i have major doubts on the abilities of the previous owners. I do plan on changing the filter.

I know it's not a "standard" tf727 converter, at least as far as dodge goes, the ones on the dodge trucks have the flyweel and convert as 1 piece.

As far as the tires, I am in minot, north dakota. I don't have any pics right now, but if you are interested i could get some soon. I'm not too worried about their ride as this is just going to be a kind of toy/get me to work and back in a blizzard jeep smile.gif . If they are even half decent tires and i could find rims cheap i may go for it. If not i'll just say screw it and find something else to use smile.gif .

The converter isn't that far burnt. The paint is gone, but the snout isn't colored. I plan to just flush the tranny and cooler and put in a new converter.
Does anyone know where to get a convert cheaper?

thank you all very much!

Don't know where you can get one cheap, but watch ebay. I picked up a TCI "Sat nite truck special" there for a pretty good price. The extra 300 stall makes for some good power getting on the ground when it hooks up with larger tires.
