View Full Version : Torque?

I made some progress with these pulleys. I managed to get the main pulley and fan pulley off the old beat Wagoneer I bought this weekend, and I have mounted them on my Cherokee.

Q. Are the bolts that hold the main pulley to the harmonic balancer supposed to be torqued down to a certain pressure? Or did I do OK by just tightening the grease out of them?

Q. Is there a trick to tightening the bolts without spinning the engine? I tried jerking the bolts in but I don't know if I was able to truly tighten them down.

I assure you, I do not want a repeat of this disaster.

Take off the bellhousing cover, and use a persuader (big ole screwdriver) to stop the flywheel from moving. Also helps to grab onto one of the torque converter bolts too for added grippage.. have a friend secure it in this way while you torque the pully bolts.

The 84 FSM says 90 lbs for the harmonic balancer - 30 lbs for the pulley bolts. Book also says if you can't get the balancer torqued then put the pulley and belts on and try again. I think Clark has the right idea though - don't give it a chance to move.

Clark, I'm not sure I know what the bellhousing is.

OK Reddog, now I have an excuse to go buy a torque wrench!
