... Some of the newer transmissions require Dextron III only.

Shop people tell me that Dextron III is OK for use in the older Trannies...

Have a good one, http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and … CUL.. Don S..

I put the Dextron III in my 727 a month ago when I put a new pan gasket on. It works fine. I put the stuff that said it was for older transmissions, which mine definitely is. I doubt that it is any different that the stuff for new transmissions, but what the heck!

I heard years ago about TYPE F,, but thought that was only if it was a new rebuild,, can you mix Dextron II and F with no adverse effects?

... In the 1950s there were two types of automatic transmission fluid; 'Type F' was for Fords and 'Type A' was for GM Hydromatics.

These were something like 5-weight motor-oil and the difference was the amount of anti slipping additives. From that point they have continually changed the modifiers and the base stock. The Dextron III, I believe, is required in 2000 Grand Cherokees and newer because it contains better heat conditioners.

phil,

Don't mix Type F and Dexron. They are different. Like Don S mentioned, typically Type F is for Ford trannies(I have an F250), Dexron III is the same as Dexron II--each evolution of Dexron is compatible with the earlier version, they simply improve the formula, so using Dexron III in a Dexron-II recommended application is fine.
