As a lot of my fellow fsj'ers know I am doing my 401 engine swap Oct. 11. I need to know a few things to get prepared. Just so you know when the 401 was put in the 89, the original parts were used to put everything back together. So when I have it out is there anything I should replace on it so it's not a nightmare for me later?

Here's my other questions.

1. Can I swap the 401 and tranny from the 89 together as 1 piece?

2. During the swap a lot of people have said to change the water pump during the process. Ok. So what BRAND NAME should I use?

3. How many beers can I have during the swap without screwing up?

So I went to flowkoolers website and they have several options for thermostats.
160
180
195
205

so what one should I get with it? and why so many choices.

Two guys doing the job so I betta get a keg.

You're in OR so a 180 is probably fine, that's what I ran in WA. Wouldn't put a stock 195 in there, think that was more for emissions then good sense. Get a Robert Shaw high flow thermostat, you can find the stuff in 4wd.com

Plan on getting a lower radiator hose with a wire in it. The flowkooler might collapse the regular one.

I had a question pertaining to engine swaps. I have a 76 wagoneer (good body Bad motor) And A 70 wagoneer (bad Body Good Motor). i want to know if the motors are interchangeable. I want to put the 70's motor in the 76 the 70 has the 350

Just swap the whole engine (and motor mounts to the frame), tranny and transfer case (Dana 20) into the '76. You may have a little clearance issue between the D20 and the gas tank and from what I've read elsewhere you can redrill the tank mounting holes and move it aft 2" while still clearing the axle by at least 1/2" or so. Might want to see if the '70 gas tank would swap in ok.
Probably need the radiator also.

What about the flexplate, isn't there something special about the flexplate on the 401 (external balanced??). Just figured I would make note of it.

He already had it mated to another 727, so he most likely has the correct flexplate. That's right. I'm going to swap the engine/tranny together considering the transfer case is new as well.

Good advice.

Get a Robert Shaw high flow thermostat cool. I'll find one of these.

Thanks for saving me some leg work on this guys. It's gonna be a blast.

Does Robert Shaw make a "Fail-open" thermostat?

You can get the fail-safe thermostats, but I don't think they are a high flow design. http://www.motoradusa.com/

Might be nice to find one that was high flow design.

Powerhouse - you may need to swap motor mount towers as well.
