Hello:
I am looking to repaint my '88 GW. The original color is black with tan interior. I want to paint it midnight blue color - and factory match it.
Would this pose a resale problem by changing the color if different than the factory stock color it came with? It will be high quality paint job stripped to the metal and repainted from the ground up.
Thanks!
Just my two cents but unless you gut the doors/interior, strip the firewall, under hood, cargo area etc and repaint "everything" it'll always look like a hack job if you change colors from original no matter how good the finish work is on the exterior. If resale is a big concern to you I'd repaint it the original color. But on the other hand GW's aren't exactly collectors items and in big demand(least not here anyway) so you may not hurt the price much but unless done right it won't help the resale value. Again...just my opinion.

The biggest problem I see with changing the color is where it doesn't match under the hood, door jambs, etc. It just takes a lot more labor in preparation to get it to look right. One other problem though is getting touch up paint to match. If it's the orignal color, you can always match up the color with the color code on the vehicle. Just make sure you keep a record of the color and pass it along with the wag if you sell it.
It would hurt the value if you had it as an antique.
My preference is to stick with the original color...I hated my J-10's color when I got it and I wanted to change it desperately. I finally just said it came this way, it'll stay this way. It turned out beautiful in morocco buff and metallic bronze. See wm osborne's 79-j-10 in reader's rigs.

I just had my repainted and the original color was that midnight blue color. Man was I unhappy with my paint job! The color shows imperfections in the body like crazy, but the paint color looks great. I guess thats what I get for not spending the extra bucks on the paint job. I would stay with the original color my friend. But chances are, if you sell it you wont get a whole lot out of it anyway, so I wouldnt let that stop me. Only thing is you will end up paying alot more for a good quality paint job because you have so much more to paint.

FYI, check out PaintScratch.com for touch up paints and factory color codes, etc. My 89GW is the Spinnaker Blue - kind of like a sky blue. Everyone loves it and I get tons of compliments. Anyway....
