GW wiper noise

I've had 2 FSJ's now, an 81 GW (actual title was Wagoneer LTD) and my current 87 GW. The wiper mechanism on both screech like banshees. It can't just be my rigs that do this. Anyone else have this problem? Even better, does anyone have a solution?

Does it sound like the wipers or the linkage? If it is the wipers try using a powder cleaner on the windshield(bon-ami). That has helped mine. Gets all the oils, waxes and dirt off.

wunna the guys on the bmw bb passed on this info regarding wiper blade chatter. he said that the trick is to bend the arms in such a way as to keep the wiper blade perpendicular to the windshield for as much of the arc as possible gonna give it a try when iget the time

Nope, it's not chatter, and it's not the wiper to windsheild contact. Its the linkage.

Since I'm batting 2 for 2, it seems to be a systemic problem, which is why I figured someone else must also have run into the "fingernails on a chalkboard" feature of the wipers.

If no one has experience with this, I guess it's time to probe the linkage with a stethoscope.

Just until last night I had that problem. I covered just the wiper arms where they exit the cowl with spray silicone. I didn't think I did much but today they were silent. You could also lube the arms under the dash but that would require work, and that is something I am against.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be in the motor itself. There is a spring that holds the motor shaft in place(?) and it has a length of metal that rubs against a large gear. I popped the spring out (left the motor where it belongs) and used a Dremmel tool to take it down a bit. Problem solved.
