in the middle of a comp. restow and i am hitting the tranny next. my question is after talking with my tranny guy he was saying he had never heard of after-market torque converters and such! am i mistaken or have i heard you guys talking about rv converters or heavy duty converters? also while unleashing my wrath of dumb, what is the advantage of a reverse shifting auto tranny? thanks in advance

Wow, so all he ever installs are torque-converters made by the original manufacturer...

He must mean that he hasn't heard of PERFORMANCE torque converters. Which means he is a particularly ignorant fellow, fixated on the OEM/Replacement business. Fine; he probably subscribes only to the tranny trade journals that focus on how new products improve business revenue.
But yes, there ARE aftermarket performance torque-converters. And you probably have no use for one, as the increased stall will not realize you any performance benefits for the cost it involves, not just in initial expense, but in low-speed driveability and overall fuel-economy. If anything, a "Towing/RV" level converter would be your best bet.
As for a "reverse-pattern" shift modification, again, not for our FSJ's. It turns the "D S L" range into a "1 2 3" range, with no automatic shift between gears and no cushion for each shift. This is great if you've got a drag car and a ratchet floor-mounted shifter, and you like heavy wheelspin on street-tires when the tranny bangs into each gear. Can you imagine driving an FSJ with a column shifter like this every day? Not pretty. It would also shorten the life of your tranfer-case, if you ever drove in 4wd Full-time mode.

i used an Alison automatic torque convertor out of a medium duty truck in my 400, it has all the "high performance" options such as two bearings and furnace brazing but without the "high performance" cost, i also upgraded inside the trans, stuff like extra clutch plates etc, so I would imagine, I don't know for sure or I'd tell you but Chrysler like GM used the same basic trans in a lot of different vehicles so there has to be a "heavy duty" or "rv" version out there you just need to find a tranny guy who knows, good luck
