Bummer on it being out already... if it was still in, and had a starter on it, you could do a comp test, and find out some of the condition. With it out, I would personally tear it down completely, and do a rebuild on it, then you'll also have a fresh motor to put into your rig, w/o having any down time.

Here are the things I would do, short of a complete tear-down:

1. Pull oil-pump cover and check for badly-scored walls where the gears turn

2. Pull the intake and look for signs of the cam lobes rounding off (wear will be on the edges of the lobes, rather than a wavy pattern slightly offset from the center)

3. Pull the oil-pan and the rear bearing cap. Check if the bearing is pounded (discolored) and/or the crank journal is scored/scratched. Lay some plastigage on the journal, torque the cap back down, then remove it and check if the clearances are within specifications.

If it shows the above signs, I wouldn't consider it worth anything more than a core motor in need of a rebuild.

Of course I use Plastigage; I just love the look on part-monkey's faces when I ask for a pack! ;)

It'll do in a pinch, or when you don't want to pull the crank. It showed the shortblock I put in my Cherokee to be within spec (albeit on the high-end), and the motor pumps out 40psi just rolling around town, so I trust it as far as it goes.

I wouldn't use it to build a race-motor... smile.gif
