Has anybody found an aftermarket system that will meet California emissions?

The best thing I have found to do is to build two motors. One that is totally stock, exactly how it came from the factory and the other can be however wild you want it. When it is time to smog the Jeep, out comes one motor,in goes the other.

Rompn's right. The issue is not actually the emissions output of one's vehicle. Rather, the vehicle must be equipped with emissions-certified original equipment or certified replacement equipment, and then it must be tuned well enough to pass emissions testing.

This is one of the things that bonehead government folks haven't sorted out yet.

Veepster, just curious, but how are you able to pass smog with your set up?

Well Veepster, I've wondered how you get past the smog checks too. So how about clueing us in?

a crisp $100 bill goes a LONG way in passing the visual part of the inspection.......I pass the sniffer no problem....visual is the difficult part...

I believe Turbo City (http://www.turbocity.com) has a C.A.R.B. approved. Also, the new Holley (http://www.holley.com) may be C.A.R.B. approved as well.

I talked to Turbo City about a year ago and asked them about an AMC 360 set-up. They said no problem and, if memory serves, it would be about $1,000 installed. They also run it on their smog equip. prior to leaving and will provide C.A.R.B certificates.

well, when I do fuel injection, its going to be an interesting time for me to get smogged. I tried paying people off and it didnt work a couple monts ago, so i broke down and bothered to put all the smog equipment on for an hour, and passed, but when I do fuel injection, im pretty sure that the one i will get will not have a carb number, but there is one more way around it...you can go to a smog referee, they will run the numbers and such, and they have the power to let things go if he feels its right...im guessing the conversation will go something like this.... "Hell Mr Smog guy. I have this fuel injection system on my jeep that does not have a CARB EO number. If you would like, I will take the time to put the carb back on, and make it run worse, burn more gas, and put out a lot more smog. Or, If you would like, you can allow the fuel injection for the sake of the enviornment that you are trying to preserve by having smog restrictions. What will it be, Mr. smog guy?

and we will see what happens in 2 years when im up for smog again.

Ok Guys,

After doing some research, I think I can build you a TBI EFI kit that can be made CA legal. The JPEG image below is what I found out about CA engine changes and based on this, it can be done, you just have to be humble about it.

I am quite sure that Turbocity is NOT doing the ignition timing for a $1000 installed price tag. I can't even do that. The ignition timing is where the emissions start to get played with. The fuel issue is pretty much a non-issue due to the O2 feedback situation. In other words, the system will always maintain a 14.7 AFR no matter what you do to the emissions controls, EGR, etc. This is a DESIRABLE feature, since the catalytic convertor works best at 14.7 AFR. The spark timing is another issue. There are non-linear vacuum switches, coolant temp switches, etc, that all effect the ignition timing. I am quite certain that both Turbocity and Howell are not doing ignition timing on the CA approved setups and this is fine if that's what you want. I can do it either way and the price still stays at $800, since doing the ignition timing is no more difficult than not doing it, as long as you have a magnetic pickup distributor.
