View Full Version : best source for ignition switched power for choke
When I installed a Carter AFB, I used the same wire for the choke as was originally going to the little solenoid that stops the MC 4350 from allowing the FSJ to "Diesel" when it gets shut off. It worked great for a while, but a while back, the wife drove my jeep while the (-) battery cable was disconnected (it ran, but poorly and she thought it was "runnning out of gas" ). Anyway, since then the choke is not functioning, and if I can't figure out why that wire no lnger has power, where would be a good place to splice in for switchable power to run the electric choke/
THanks
I've run a wire into the cab and tapped into the fusebox before.

there is a wire on the wiper motor that is keyed and is a full 12 volt

The coil 12 volt power source is ignition switched and there may even be an unused bullet style connector like the one to the coil filter capacitor available at that location. Or you could make a wire TEE to allow the choke to be Tee'd off of the coil power source at that location. I don't believe the 76 has a resistor wire or ballast resistor so it should be ok to connect it there. At least I have done this in the past without problems. The one thing to be careful of is increasing the current load through the ignition switch. Those switches can be overstressed so the best way to do it is to use the ignition switched power to switch a relay that provides power to the choke coil that doesn't pass through the ignition switch.

If you don't mind running a new wire just run a lead straight off the starter solenoid switched post. It should be the small post nearest the + battery lead.
