I'm in the middle of restoring my 66'j-3000 and I got a line on a dana 60 for the rear but it's had disc brakes swap with no room for a parking brake. I'm looking for any ideas on install a driveshaft or t-case parking brake. the truck has the 327 vigilant, t-18 and Dana 20 case. Any suggestions?
I also installed a 6" spring lift and wonder if that would clear 36's or 38's and what gearing I should run?

Where did you get a 6" lift for a 66 J-3000?? I am looking for a lift for a 71 J-4000 and they should be the same I think. What was the cost of that rascal??

My wag came stock with the t-case parking brake. I had the 327, T-85, D20 combo. I am surprised yours did not have it as well. Mine is sitting in the garage anxiously awaiting to be reinstalled.

i would much rather have rear discs and no E brake than drums with a functing e brake.
as pc mentioned, some early d20s had E brakes, and all d18s that came from cjs had a drum e brake on the rear output.supposedly the few 18s that found their way into bigger rigs didnt have it,they used conventional rear durm e brakes.kinda goofy, huh?
despite the fact that my has an e brake,i will prolly end up installing a line lock,in addition. for some reason im not having alot of faith that the 18 e brake will hold my big jeep still on any kind of incline. install a line lock on the rear brakes, then you just simply mash the brake pedal and flip the switch.voila! a "parking brake". i guess the one disadvantage is that if you have no battery, you have not power to activate the linelock.hmmmm.
we have finished the vw turning brake install on my friends xj chero. he made a slik little mechanism tht flips up and keeps the levers applied, very affectively using the turning brake as a parking brake.its completely mechanical, andit held is jeep in the middle of his very steep driveway for over a week while he had somethin else in the garage.
some other food for thot,anyway...

in the daze of my youth, woodsbuggy #2 was a 54 newyorker deluxe with a 331 hemi. (wish i still had it) only working brake was the shaft mounted e-brake. it stopped that tank pretty good. iwas mostly interested in motion and i didnt need brakes to make it go http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

As far as the lift goes I just took the springs into a local spring shop and had new fronts made with 6" of more arch and I flipped the rear shackle and added 2" to the rear. I still need to get the brake lines, pitman arm and get spring over pads mounted on the dana 44 I have out of a 79' J10. I don't know what year they changed the springs but my fronts mount on the side of the frame like the rears, not under it.
It cost 700$ cash canadian, which should be a lot cheaper for you guys.
Hey SCOTTY you talk about a line lock. What is it? Just a valve for the brake line that holds the pressure on or does it hold the pedal down. And how does the transfer case parking brake work that came from the factory. Is it a drum set-up? Is it a seperate bolt on unit or what? I love to go with the discs but I need that e-brake to certify it.

Went to Canada, to the Falls, and went to the casino and at the currency exchange office $500 US got me I think it was $675 Canadian.

The problem with using a line lock for a parking brake is the nasty habit of hydraulic braking systems leaking down and then the brakes let go and the rig rolls down the hill. No matter how good your system is, there is still leak down and this makes a line lock ineffective. I whis my 65's had the driveshaft brake on them, but I never got that lucky.

Looking at two Dana 20 side by side on my work bench it looks like you could just make a regular D20 use the Drive shaft brake. If you can find one that is not with the case. I have driven a few older trucks that used the drive shaft brake, and they don't work all that well, maybe it was because these where larger industrial trucks.Does anybody know where to get brake shoes for these? I have looked and if I can't find anybody who sells them for a good price, I will have them relined locally.

Don't know if this will help find a supplier. but The Pennsylvania Brake Co. will reline some things. I can't rmemeber if they do only rivets or only adhesive. They don't do both if I recall. Also there is a driveshaft place in North Philly that does basically industrial stuff, might be a lead there. Its called the Rowland Co.
FWIW my 1960 F350 (F*rd) had a driveshaft mounted hand brake. It was on the front shaft. Its over at my friends house, (gave it to him) I could check it out for size etc if anyone wants. The brake band can still be bought for that one.

My t-case brake worked like a champ! I prefer it over the rear brake style. It is a little drum brake. They make the setups for T*y's and Zuk's that are disc.
As far as finding new pads, I do not know never had to look. How often do you use it that you would have to change them that often?

Just finished rebuilding one and was going to swap it into one of my Jeeps and along with some other stuff. It looks like it had the origional brake pad on it they are trashed. I use it pretty often on hills in my one Jeep. I have it setup to be more convient than a hydraulic brake lock when using it with the clutch.

my shoes were worn to the point that i could still spin the drum by hand if i tried hard enuff. www.quadratech.com (http://www.quadratech.com) sells the shoes for the 18,if they are the same, for 39.95. i ended up just having mine relined for about $30 locally. it works good enuff now that i used the e brake to hold the output shafts still while i tightened down the yoke nuts.

How about this one:
Use a disc brake from the front wheel of a newer motorcycle (seen done with a honda disc).
This way, you are not really losing any length, and it will grab well. Can get a mechanical e-brake for a disk rotor from Summit or Jegs.
Could probably hobble it all together for <$200. This is what I am planning to do when I convert my 88 w/ R44 to disc (ASAP)
Hope this helps

wow, how ironic! yesterday i was driving up a really steep hill w/ loose traction when my front driveshaft decided to be too short. much to my surprise, i realized that my brakes were completely useless in reverse. the only way i managed to stop the rig was to slam it into park.
so on the way home i was thinking about how i could fabricate a driveshaft parking brake. maybe w/ our collective knowledge we can brainstorm some ideas. i have an '87 wagoneer. i really like the idea of the motocycle setup. also, race shops make brackets for different caliper applications. would the disc interfere w/ the cross member supporting the transfer case?
let's hear everyone's ideas!

This maybe a little bit off of the subject, but since you are discusing the D20 in some means. Didn't anyone doing a rebuilt on one of these find a source for the rubber rings that go in the washers that fit onto the shafts for the yokes? Also, did any one find a source for the felt oil seals? I was luck to have some NOS seals still in the pack I picked up locally, but no one I checked with carried them. I also had to make the felt oil seals myself. Anyone know of a good source for these?
Hey, I just was reading something about Ford F-450 using a driveshaft parking brake. If someone could get a technical manual or something on one of these, it might be a good place to look. Find out how the driveshaft parking brakes used are used in new trucks. Maybe can come of with a real diehard setup. And I thought everyone was abandoning this concept.
