This has probably been discussed, but I can't find it in a search. Has anyone ran the Thorley's for a CJ on their FSJ? I don't like the way the FSJ application has the drivers side pointing straight down. I have the 78' Chief, so I don't think I need them that way. I also don't need the emissions and I think that's the only way they come for FSJ's. Any help appreciated. Thanks...Ty

Ask Wesdog. He is the only person I know who runs the Thorley headers. Might hang out a bit the new Edelbrock shorty headers are due in January.

I think you can get Hooker headers with or without smog fittings.

I use the FSJ smog version of Thorleys that are designed for single exhaust. I had to modify them so they would clear my 7 quart oilpan. I don't know if the CJ model will clear everything in the FSJ engine compartment.
I would also recommend checking out new Edlebrock shorty headers.

From what I have been told, shorty headers don't have the same scavenging effect of full length headers.
The FSJ has plenty of room for full length headers. I have heard good things about the Thorley's. I just don't need the smog junk. Not too hot about the location of the driver side collector. But I may have a line on a good deal.
Wesdog, did you leave yours pointing down? Or re-locate it pointing back? Any pics available? Thanks...Ty

Here is a photo of the driver's side and yes it is still pointing down:

Unless you are going to be running at around 7-8000 rpms you're going to notice very little effect from any header, if anything it will just move your power band up to a higher rpm range.
If you're drag racing and you care about 100ths of a second then shoot for the headers, otherwise don't worry about it a whole lot.

I was under the impression that these Thorley's tri-y design are very good for midrange on up? 2500 rpm up?

Wesdog, thanks alot for the pics. Are you pretty happy with them? Fit and performance etc? Thanks...

As far as headers go I am satisfied with the Thorleys but I don't recommend headers for FSJ applications. I wouldn't do it again. I do think you can improve the rest of the exhaust system. I went to a 3" single exhaust with a hiflow cat and turbo muffler.
If you really want headers I would go with the Edlebrock shorty's. For most FSJ applications I don't think you are going to see much if any gains over the stock exhaust manifolds in the RPM range these vehicles normally operate. Headers will significantly increase the temperature in the engine area and increase the noise level. IMHO there are better ways to spend money to improve performance. Now if you had an AMX that would be a little different.
