Hello Jeepers,

My 78 has vacuum that flucuates from 0 to maximum. Chiltons says this type of flucuation is a blown head gasket or a dead cylinder, my question is if the haed gasket is blown, then shouldn't I be running hot. What else can I check to verify results ? I will do a compression check this weekend to chek for a bad cylinder.

I'd probably check for fluids intermingling where they shouldn't - oil in radiator - antifreeze in the oil. When did it happen? All the sudden with a noise and then started running worse than ever? I'd at least take a close look at the fluids, and then go for the compression test. Hope it works out for the better.

Unsure BIGYELLOW,

I Changed the oil and the tranny fluid so far, the oil was dirty and thin but not milky, the antifreeze is I will change this weekend. I just purchased the vechile from a guy in Tijuiana, Mexico for $500.00.

It has some minor surface rust but the floorboards are solid.

I believe that a dead cylinder caused by an ignition miss will also yield the big fluctuation on your vac gauge. This makes sense since the gauge doesn't know what is causing the dead cylinder and if you have no spark there you get no burn and therefore the same reading as if there were other problems in the cylinder. So, check your plug wires, etc.
