View Full Version : Learned a neat trick yesterday...Extracting a captured bearing race

This would apply to any bearing race that you cannot get behind with a puller to remove. I'm rebuilding a PTO unit for my military truck. The bearing caps are machined to where there is absolutely no way to get behind them with a puller. After thinking about it for two days, I happened to mention it to a guy at NAPA. He said to stand the part up in a vise, weld three or four 1 inch welds right on the roller surface around the inside of the race. Stay away from the edges. Let it cool naturally and the race darn near falls right out! I thought this was a pretty cool trick. I had never heard of that before. Problem solved.... Granted most all FSJ bearings and races are doable with the right tools, this trick may help in a pinch.... :D

a good shot of freon works well too, especially if you don't live in an EPA controlled area.

Access to liquid nitrogen is nice too :D :D :D . Now if only I could bring the parts into work without getting yelled at again :rolleyes: :(

if you have a co2 bottle for on board air the co2 is 240 degrees below o and it works too ......try that with a on board compressor >>>>>>>>>
