welcome 3jeep. im from concord on the other side of the bay.

more than likely the greater volume of air in the tank is being presurized by heat and is finding any litle crack in ur 32 year old fuel filler hoses.

better check all of them from the filler neck to the tank for wear n tear.

Check for any moisture spot(gas) anywhere along your fuel lines from your tank to your engine.

Just roll down the windows !
Seriously it is probably a weak rubber line or a small crack in the tank. If you loosen the filler cap and let the pressure out and replace the cap do you still smell gas or does it take a while to re-appear ? I'd say replace the hoses and check the metal lines all the way to the pump and check to see if the pump is wet with gas. If it is still there take out the tank and test for leaks .

I would consider this a very dangerous and a nonfixable condition. Send it to me I will dispose of it for you. I would do this just in the interest of your safety, cause I am a nice guy........... OK OK!! As mentioned check all lines hoses and cap. I would also open the hood to determine if the fumes are stronger under the hood or from the rear of the Wag. This would give you a better idea where to start anyhow. :D

check around the base of the fuel filter. mine was leaking there for quite some time, giving me the same wonderful smell.

Does this only happen when idling in city traffic? I noticed gas fumes whenever I drove my truck into work (30 mile one way drive in heavy stop and go traffic). Finally, I decided it was probably just fuel boiling off in the carb float bowl and exiting the vent. Since CA FSJ's had EVAP systems, I scrounged a charcoal cannister from a junkward and installed it on my 49 state truck, which solved the problem.

I have a 79 wagoneer 360 400 and I get the wonderfull gas smell also. It does'nt seem yo matter if the gas tank is full or emtpy. I get the smell most of the time. I haven't seen any wet spots where fuel might be leaking. Does any have any other suggestions?

OK I too had this problem, was just Troublesome till it finally started leaking so I could find the Problem....

Take off your Driverside panel all the way in the rear. (you know the one near the tail gate) check out the Fuel filler hose right where it makes the turn... there is a seam that runs Vertically down the back of the hose. Mine had split from Trying to fill the tank and twisting the silly thing to get the right angle to fill the tank.

Mine had a small split in it about 1/2 inch long. Since no one that I know of makes them anymore... I repaired mine. I took Black Form-a-gasket #2 (non-hardening)spread open the crack put a touch of it in there... put a nice glob on the out side of the crack spreading it out a bit. Then I took Black Elect tape and rapped the Kronk out of it all the way up and 2 to 3 inches below the repair. (I took the hose out of the truck to repair it) I let it dry for a few hours before putting it back in...

Now I watch how I put the fuel in the Truck.

Mine has 2 vapor lines, one from the fuel filter (the offset nipple) and another from the charcoal cannister.
The line from the filter (runs down the engine, then along the driver's framerail) returns vapor to the tank, which is necessary because the engine needs liquid gas to run. If enough vapor is in the fuel feed line, 'vapor lock' occurs and it stalls.

The other (running along the pass. frame rail, then across the underside of th floor)line brings vapor from the tank to the cannister, from there it is purged into ported? vacum to be burned.

Oh yeah, also there's a line from the bowl vent (top front of the 2150) to bring vapor to the cannister...

Hope this helps...

I was getting that for about 2 weeks, it did it when i got on the gas...and well....1 week ago my fuel line burst right in front of the tank where there is that 3" of rubber and spewed 21 gallons of gas all over th ebottom of my truck.

it sucked to say the least.

Does anyone know the sizes and length for all the hoses that go into the tank? I want to get all new hose and replace my dry craked ones ASAP. Thanks!!

Those get saturated eventually and need to be replaced occasionally. Also look real close at your fuel pump for leaks.

Check your main fuel fill line. Mine was original (79) and was starting to crack. When I filled the truck it was pourous enough to seep a little. The other vent lines all seemed OK, so I replaced the fill line.

Word of caution, the ID On the fill hose is 1"...No parts house will stock 1" fuel line. IF they can even get it cause modern cars and most smartly engineered older cars used a bigger fill line......Maybe that's why our trucks are hard to fill...

Anyway, I went with double walled water hose, its WAY better than the stock stuff and the stock stuff lasted almost 25 years. Cost me about $40 for the necessary 40" of hose. DAYEMMMM!
