View Full Version : Back Pressure Question

I was told a long time ago that the catalytic converter on my 258 CJ7 was necessary to keep back pressure in the engine - which helps the engine produce power (torque if I remember.)

Does the same principal apply to a 360 engine? I haven't done anything to the exhaust on my Wag after the rebuild and I know I have a couple of exhaust leaks at the Y, and the muffler is older than Moses - with no converter. Wondering if that would effect the engine perfomance.

If this is true on the 258 I was just wondering if it is true on other motors.

Thanks :D

Some backpressure is good for torque, but too much can restrict power. I put a better exhaust on my 78 Wag and I got more torque and horsepower, judging from the butt dyno:)

Ok, one more question.

Since it doesn't have a cat on it now, should I just make sure to get a good muffler and less leaks? smile.gif

Yes, do not put a cat on, it is not required for emissions, and would not help performance. Just get a good muffler and fix the leaks, and it should do nicely. I should add, my improvements included a set of headers, but they are an extra pain.
