I have a 81 wagoneer and I am having a hard time finding out if the 4 wheel drive is in gear or not. All the 81 has is the shifter that looks like a flag next to the seat...can I shift while the wagoneer is moving or do I have to stop? Most of the time I have to stop and turn the motor off...if I dont I cant get the trans in park without making a small light metal or plastic grinding nose. Help I dont know what I am doing...If I am in nutral everything disconects and I go no where, does this disconnect everything or just the 4 wheel drive???

Texas wagoneer;
... First you need to know which transfer case is in your '81. If you have front wheel hubs that can be locked and unlocked you would have an NP208 Part time Transfer caselike my '81. No front locking hubs should mean it is equipped with an NP219 style Quadra-Trac Transfer case that is equipped with a viscous coupling.
What part of the great state are you in?
Good Luck.. http://www.boylover.net/ubb/graemlins/cool_shades.gifand CUL.. Don S..

I do not have locking hubs...so I guess I have a NP219??? my question is how do I know how to put in gear how do I know it is working right? Or is my trans screwed up? I am new to the FSJ world....need as much help as I can get.

… Yes … I’ve been to Graham and go through Loving often.
The NP 219 shifter sequence is low position is 4Low, next up is Neutral, next is 4 High and last is Lock. Lock position is to bypass the viscous coupling in the transfer case and there is an indicator light that only lights up in the four-wheel high –lock position as a warning.
... Only use 4 High-lock in poor traction conditions when necessary or you will wear out some parts and tires. Be sure to keep tire types, sizes, and air pressures equil. An extra pound or so in the front tires would be good if you are not carring a load.
Good luck and http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and … CUL.. Don S..

If you have the NP219 then you are always in one type of 4 wheel drive or another, either full-time or part-time. Normally, in the position mentioned above as "4 High" you in full-time 4 wheel drive and the transfer case will allow some slippage between the front and rear tires for going around turns, high traction surfaces, etc. When you put it in "Lock" you are in part-time 4 wheel drive (front and rear axles are locked together and will spin at the same speed) and you should only engage this on slick surfaces, such as a snowy road, mud, etc.
I believe you should be able to shift to 4 high lock "at any legal speed" or more or less around 45 mph or less. Although you likely won't need to shift while going that fast, personally I would slow down to somewhere around 10-15 before I shifted.
Anything I'm missing or have wrong guys?

Thank you guys, but I still cant get it into or out of gear without stoping and putting it into park...and then if it is out of gear and I try to put the trans into park it makes a noise that sounds like light metal or plastic grinding before it stops and goes back into park. Help is some thing worn out?????

I think you SHOULD put it in park. If you don't, the internal in the trans start to spin due to friction and the noise you are hearing is the parking pawl trying to engage, like putting it in park while you are still rolling.

Try shifting in neutral and see if that helps any. I know when shifting from hi to low you are suppose to be at or near a stop and in neutral (I think).

Not at all sure of the transfer case, but you should probably put the vehicle in neutral, and kill the engine, then shift the Transfer Case lever.
Now start her up and see if she behaves a little better.
This seems to work on quite a few of the various part time drive transfer cases.
I may be all wet here, because Guilbeau's my name...Electronic's MY game...
Mechanical stuff confuses me.
