View Full Version : What does a properly working gas gauge look like?

Can anyone confirm the existence of a "fuel low" idiot light on the dash in 1989 GW?

In wet weather, I remember seeing such a light one time, which seemed to be caused by rain getting between the frame and the tank and shorting out a connection somewhere.

If my fuel gauge only reads between 7/8 full and 1/8 empty, is that an instrumentation issue or a sending unit issue?

There is a small round amber light on the gas guage close to "E". If the sending unit is working properly the light should come on with about 2 gallons left.
A hard short (guage feed to ground)would make the guage register full. Lack of ground would register empty. Two connections on top of the tank on the sending unit. Ground (of to the side)and guage feed (center pin).
The original sending units did not last very long. Usually give those exact symptoms you mention. The new replacement units are sealed and will last much longer. Replacement is easy. Tilt up the rear seat and lift the carpet on the drivers side below the seat. Notice a 5" round plate on the cargo floor. Remove the plate (4 screws or rivits) and you have access to test the guage and/or replace the sending unit. smile.gif

If it stays on "E" then you are driving a typical FSJ if it is near the "F" mark then you need to spend more time behind the wheel. :D

And when I driving, it's my wallet that reads "empty" and my credit card that reads "full."

By the reostat, do you mean the spiral wire wrapped thing that the arm rides on?

Is this the part that is encased in plastic?

If so, my replacement sender is the old style and I will have to shell out for a "new" new one.

Thanks.
