I have never done a valve adjustment and need some pointers on how to do it and what is needed. The motor is a 360, and I need to do the adjustment on my '79 J-10.

Thanks

Bryan

as far as i know, only the 4-134 F-Head, 6-226 L-Head, 6-230 OHC and 4-126 Diesel have adjustable valves. all other engines have hydraulic lifters which maintain a zero clearance.
the hydraulic lifters are set after overhaul, by bringing the piston to TDC compression and turning the nut until the rocker arm just touches the valve stem, then 1/2 turn more.
you may want to check the rocker arms where the rods connect, my old 360 had a problem of eating the cupped area of the arms, lack of good oiling i guess.

my 78 360 has non adjustable rockers... 23 ft lbs and your done.... you may have different heads if you need adjustment to your valves

If it's stock, no way to adjust them other than new rockers and maybe pushrods. These AMC's have a tendency to have some tappet noise. I've had about 20 of them and about one out of 5 don't tap.

AFAIK, there is supposed to be some preload on the lifters. Atleast according to the summit install sheet I got. But again, not much adjusting going on there. Different rockers or different pushrods. Not much to do. If it's making noise, R&R.

amc stoped using adj. rockers in the early 70's.
assuming your 360 is originle there is no adj. to be done.
like river beast said 23 foot pounds and call it a day

Do yours tick just at startup? or even when warm?
