Just las thursday I ordered a TFI kit from Glenn at www.driveajeep.com. (http://www.driveajeep.com.) It came in the mail today. Within 2 hours I had it installed and running. It is remarkable. I noticed an immediate difference in idle. It was smoother and higher (so I toned it down a notch) The accelleration is similarly impressive. It really makes a big difference. I don't think the kit is too much more than buying new parts ($129) and as far as I'm concerned well worth it.

TFI is the coil that Ford trucks used in the middle 80's. The little box looking one. It's almost a direct drop in replacement to the old oil-can style of the 20's that was used in our rigs.. At least the distributor was done right.. just a cap/rotor/adapter to make it work with the new coil.

Came with wires not plugs. I think I might have screwed something up though, see my next post.

I was speaking with a fellow wagoneer owner about the TFI upgrade i had read about here and he mentioned that that this also might require upgrading the carburator to a 4barrel. is this true?

The real TFI or Team Rush upgrade is here http://www.geocities.com/swbjeep/ignition.html . It is much cheaper than buying it from someone.
MSD box is good too!

Bosox,
That doesn't make any sense. Maybe He his pulling yer leg.
TFI upgrade is about producing a higher voltage and current spark. The higher voltage lets you open up the spark plaug gap. The higher power starts a better flame front.

While a 4V carb is a "nice" upgrade, it's not necessary when doing the TFI upgrade.

Thank's guys, but what would be the benefits of a 4 barrel carb? would it save gas? or burn more? Can you tell that i'm not a mechanic?

Jowersgd,
I'm hoping you had the V8. What is the brand and part number for the spark plug wires?

Well Bosox,
Somewhere there is probably a thread on this question. Might want to do a "search", but here's a quick overview.
Each "barrel" in a carb is venturi, or hourglass shaped hole. The air rushing passed the narrow section draws fuel into the airstream. The faster the air flow in each venturi, the better it works. A 4 bbl lets you have 2 small barrels for low rpm and low power, and 2 more bbls that come into play at higher rpm, or more power is needed. A 2 bbl will have bigger barrels, but usually not flow as much as 4 bbl. Thats what all the cfm (cubic feet per minute) talk is about. 600 cfm is a pretty standard 4 bbl to use for a low rpm 360 cid V-8.
So theoretically, a 4 bbl is more efficient over a wider rpm range. Reality is that its hard to not use the extra umph, and when you open 'er up, the 4 bbl will drink more (more air requires more fuel).
