as some of ya know,i am swapping back to a d20 transfer case in order to gain some "drive stupid" durability :D as im finding the spicer 18 isnt really holding up well to the sudden shockloads that occur when bouncing up slippery, rutted hills.

the question pertains to the t18 and sm465. i know a tranny operated pto is usually run with the tranny in "neutral",and the only variance in pto speed is by varying engine RPM. the question is what happens if i run the tranny in gear, and xfer case in neutral? can the pto spin in different speeds, and in the opposite direction by running the tranny in different gears or reverse?

the different speed part is not a big deal, but i gotta have a way to be able back the cable back out when there is something at the other end of the cable, and im chained to a tree :D

if i can spin the shaft the other way by running the tranny in R and xfer in N it wont be a big deal to swap over to tranny mounted pto.

thanx for any ifo...

The PTO is run of an idler shaft, it always spins in the same direction no matter what gear the tranny is in. Any PTO winches I ever had anything to do with have a revers on the winch itself. ;)

Hmmmmmm, I have run my PTO via tcase in neutral and can vary the speed via revs or using gbox 1st, 2nd,or 3rd gear, also we left the PTO in gear and put the tcase in H2 and as I drove off about 10 meters down the road I snapped the tow cable, so I guess you could be in a gear and opertate the PTO and spinning the tyres at the same time while winching up a hill or out of a bogg.

As far as I know, my winch is either off or on, by that I mean when I engage the dog clutch via the winch handle I have winch power, when I dont want winch power I pull the lever in the opposite direction, or put the gbox in neutral or depress the clutch.

Hope this helps some.

what happens when you run your tranny in reverse? does the shaft spin in the same direction?

my dilema is that i need someway to reverse the pto shaft direction,so i can "power out"

say im pulling someone up a hill, and have to stop halfway up and reposition the winch for whatever reason. unless the person can pull forward to release tension o the cable,we are both stuck-i cannot get the cable off,or myself unhooked from the anchor point(usuaally a tree).

being able to spin te tires while winching isnt really a concern...

mine is in an automatic with the pto off the d-20. it operates with the gear selector. i wonder what happens if i engage the pto and have the t-case in gear. anyone know?

you will move smile.gif

other than that,it will depend on what gear youre in,and what your pto is running.
