Stupid water pump question?

I have to replace my timing cover, the old one is very smooth inside the water pump cavity, but the replacement one I have has some medium to heavy pitting. The cover is in excellent shape otherwise. Is it vital to have a smooth surface? will I have cooling problems with the rougher surface? Is this a stupid question? I feel like an idiot having to ask.

IT should be fine but you can clean it up if you have high spots.... pitting won't deter from it.
