I was wondering about opinions concerning how the stock AMC 360 4bbl intake stands up to the edelbrock. I found a used stock intake locally, for pretty cheap. Any smog issues here if I stay with stock manufactured equipment? What about with the edelbrock?

Thanks

Edelbrock does make an "egr" compliant intake so if you are looking at the used one make sure it has a spot for an egr. As far as performance goes I like the intake over stock. I did notice a slight low end loss but the power band was broader with the Edelbrock intake. If that doesn't sway you think of the wieght of the stock intake. All the ones I have sold and shipped have been right around 85lbs! I would say that the aluminum ones are much much lighter. Plus you can bolt just about any carb you want on.

Either way, you'll be upgrading from a 2bbl to a 4bbl, so you're probably outside the letter of your state's emissions laws, if that counts for anything. With the stock spreadbore iron intake, you get the EGR, but you're limited to the Motorcraft 4350 4bbl, or the TD adapter and the squarebore carb of your choice, either of which is inferior to a regular Performer intake.

If you want to have a chance of passing a thorough emissions inspection, though, and you can get the 4-bbl swap by them, as noted, there is an EGR version of the Performer, which would be your first choice.

Second choice would be an early ('74-'75, or '76?) squarebore factory iron intake with EGR.

Third choice would be the later '77-'78 factory spreadbore iron intake with an adapter for a squarebore carb like the Edelbrock 1400.

Fourth choice (which would be first-choice if retaining EGR was not a concern) would be an ordinary Performer intake with a 1405 or 1406.

Good Luck! smile.gif

All the smog laws and B.S. is the reason I moved to the sticks where there are no smog test on any vehicles. I lived in So.Cal for 45 years and was so sick of them telling me (basically) what I could drive and what I couldn't, I couldn't wait to move away from there. Now I can build anything, anyway that I want to without big brother breating down my neck, saying "you can't drive that on the highway if you don't have this or that".
Sorry for ranting, I'm just so happy I don't have to put up with that B.S. anymore. M.G.

The only setup that is smog legal in CA is the factory stock manifold and 2 bbl Motorcraft carb - nothing else. The Edelbrock and other manifolds and carbs that say they are smog legal are only so on a Chevy 350, not a Jeep. That said, I've been running the E'brock manifold and carb for many years and have always passed the visual and tail-pipe smog checks because I left the stock air cleaner, EGR, and air pump in place and functioning. Mileage and mid-high RPM performance are WAY better than the Motorcraft. BTW - I'm also running the off-road needle and seat kit on mine. Some folks are perfectly happy with the Motorcraft, but I could never get mine to run well. Maybe I had a lemon. I am very pleased with the E'brock stuff.

a word on motorcrafts......my 77 came with the stock motorcraft 2bbl (2100 i believe)......it went south very soon after i bought the truck.......after looking at the various performance 4bbl carbs and manifolds, and conferring with the likes of reddog and others on this board, i decided to have the existing carb rebuilt......and get this.......the thing was running so rich i was getting about 3mi/gal, the idle and choke adj screws were GONE......the vacuum lines running to it were completely shot.....etc.....the guy that rebuilt it wondered aloud repeatedly HOW i even drove the beast to his shop.......by all rights it shouldn't have even ran........but now the Motorcraft is about good as new, and it cranked, caught, and purrrrrrrred, first try, even though it's about 35 degrees out right now.........so yeah, i've heard some horror stories about the motorcraft series, about the difference between 2bbl and 4bbl carbs, stock and otherwise........but the fact that my old 360 even ran with about with a HALF working 2bbl carb, well, i'm sold on the ability of a Jeep engine to run, regardless of the DSPO upkeep.........
(oh, the shop that did the work on my carb rebuild, Pinellas Carburator, did a beautiful job, vacuum lines-pcv valve-rebuild-sparkplugs-wires-even some gas, for about 250$........very reasonable, i thought, and it was done in about 3 days)

What's the advantage of the SP-2P Edelbrock manifold. I just got one with egr from ebay for 100 total.

Thanks for all the input.
To Marvin, I am in the military, but since I'm a Texas resident, my Jeep is registered there... ;) I agree about not liking California. I love all of the off-roading that it provides, but I hate, hate, simply hate all of the B.S. that we have to put up with. Hopefully, if I'm lucky, I will be out of here after the first of the year.
To okidoc, I was going to bid on that intake, but I emailed the guy to ask if it was egr compatible, and he told me it wasn't...hahaha. I guess I should have done my homework first. Oh well, good luck with your upgrade!

To Billyj7175

Yeah I emailed him too. Them "Bought it now" anyway five minutes later. If you're in the military and in So Cal where are you? I'm USN in S.D. I work @ NTC/NMCSD
