I have a 76 chief with a 360 and a th400 trans backed by a quadratrac. The engine took a crap and I don't have the money to get a new motor. I also have a complete but wrecked 76 wagoneer with a 258 6cyl and a 3 speed manual trans. I was wondering if I could replac the 360 with the 258 with out having to modifiy anything. If not what do I need to do to make it work if it will at all? I looked at the motor mount towers on both of them and they look like they are in the same place. Does anyone know someone who has done this. Let me know what I need to do PLEASE HELP!!!

I know Jeep offered a CJ with that setup. As far as switching the motors goes, sorry--I can't help you there.

My 73 TSM shows they offered the 258/TH400/QT set up. Should be no problem. 360 and 258 bellhousings are the same and I know you have to move the xmember to the back set of holes in the frame because the 258 is longer. Also, you will definitely have to get a new flexplate specific to the 258 and possibly a new torque converter for the trans.

Thanks for the help. So you think that I might need a new torque converter too. I don't see why that should change because of the transmission being the same. O well I guess I will find out next weekend when I Try the swap.

You will need the Motor mount towers for the 258. You will also need a I6 Flexplate, if you plan on running the Automatic and Q-Track. If you plan on keeping the 3 Spd manual then you would be OK. However the Flexplate from the 360 CANNOT be used on the 258 even though it will bolt up. The torque converter will be fine. You could swap out the complete running gear from your 76 Wagoneer engine/trans/t-case, as well as Drive shafts, and clutch pedals. Easiest would be to Keep the TH400 and get the correct flexplate, minor wiring issues would be the only other thing. ;)
