A Trac-Lock was optional with most gear ratios.

In anything but Q-Trac rigs smile.gif

Jeepman, why couldn't you get a trac-lok in Q-trac rigs? Also, my buddy's dad used to race jeeps in the 70's and 80's offroad, and he told me that most 4x4's are really 2 wheel drives (since the open diffs right...) and he said since I have QT I have 3 wheel drive. That doesn't make sense to me and I've never noticed 3 powered wheels while mudding, and his dad knows I have open diffs, so do you have any idea what the heck he was talking about? Or do you think he was just drunk? (That last one is my choice...)

Thanks

Q-Tracs were only equipped with open diffs. Q-Trac does not give you 3 wheel drive. In normal mode it is possible to have only one wheel spinning. In E-Drive one front wheel and one back wheel will spin. Just the way it is ;)

CJM - Are you sure about that? I thought for all these years that because of the clutch cones on the QT, that it was always going to power at LEAST one front and one rear wheel. I thought that the failing of the chevy full-time 4x4s was that their T-cases were "open diffs" (so they could get stuck by having one tire in the air), but that quadratrac was alot better because the "diff" in the t-case was a limited slip.
I agree, of course, that QT does not give you "3 wheel drive"

I agree, of course, that QT does not give you "3 wheel drive"The Clutch cones allow a percentage of the power to be directed to front and rear axle, allow the differences in RPM's of the front and rear wheels to be equaled by slipping the clutch cones, so as to prevent windup. However depending on the condition of the clutch cones and the Q-Trac blood ect. ect. I am going to use 120 FT LBS as the break over of the clutch in a Q-Trac as an example. If stuck, and 3 wheels have GOOD traction and one does not, and it takes more then the 120 Ft LBS of output force at the T-case to Spin any of the GOOD traction wheels, the one with the least traction will do all the spinning. The output to the axle that is not spinning will be slipping at the clutch cones in the Q-Trac. This would be the reason for E-Drive, locks the two outputs together so as not to have one axle taking all the power and to save burning up the clutch cones. ;)

Thanks, CJM, that's good to know. Perhaps I've been a bit over-confident in the power of the QT clutch cones. But hey, like you said, that's what the E-drive is for!

Thanks jeepman, I didn't think he was being very accurate... There's nothing in the QT's design that would make it 3 wheel drive...
