how do I check the torque bias when the QT unit is off the truck? I'm about to go check out a rebuilt one, but I don't know what I'm looking at (yet) smile.gif

I don't know the answer, but would like to second the question. I had my QT off the wag yesterday to replace the seals that prevent ATF leaking. I was able to turn the front and rear yokes in opposite directions using just my hands and exerting very little force. Is that OK or not?

lock one yoke in a good vise then use a large torque wrench on the other it sould take 200 ft lbs before it slips make sure and tourke off of the yoke and not the nut

so just wedge the wrench in the yoke?

You'll need to keep the front input yoke from spinning and make sure the tcase is NOT in E-drive then do the test using the output yoke.

So, if I can turn the yokes in opposite directions with my hands, the QT cones must be shot, eh?

I think the limitation of the QT is no less than 75-85 ft lbs ofr torque.... but that is pretty worn out...

dumb question maybe- are the 1305 and 1339 interchangable?

Yup. The 05 has a cover bolted to where the reduction gear would normally go and the 39 has the optional reduction gear mounted.

Thanks. On my way back...

Um....do I HAVE to use a gasket from the QT to the transmission, or is there a WT way to do it?

if you can turn them in oppisite directions there is nothing wrong spiders inside QT housing make this happen just like a none possie rear end

Only thing wrong is the QT has cones inside that make it limited slip when not locked in E-Drive. The yokes are not supposed to turn like that.

OK, so let's say the cones are shot.

I seem to remember seeing a link floating around on this forum a year or so ago that went to a company that was making aftermarket QT diffs. Anyone remember that? Or have the link handy? Did anyone buy one to see if the product quality was OK, or is it best to find a good used QT diff?

... If you were talking about a STOCK BW-1339 QT then ATF and QT do not belong in the same sentence. ATF is only used when the part time kit is installed.
The correct fluid is Crown TCL-1, this could be why you're having a cone problem.

You might send a PM to Flint member #3414 he might know who rebuilds the cones

What I meant was the seals that prevent the ATF (from the transmission) from mingling with the QT oil. Ya know, the 2 back-to-back seals where the output shaft of the tranny goes into the QT.

Wow, so I just hijacked this post, huh? Sorry, Gawdzilla!

the proper way to test a QT was to hold the front yoke still while appling a torque wrench to the nut holding the rear yoke on. turn the wrench in a clockwise fashion. at least 100ftlbs shood be observed to consider the diff unit acceptable.

if the diff unit is out of the case u will need the output shafts, insert them into the unit and test as above.
