View Full Version : Shackle Flip idea
I got an idea for a shackle flip, feel free to give me some comments, questions or concerns about it. If this has already been done (this way) let me know. Thanks a lot.
<Look down>
The idea adds another pivot, that could be bolted up or something for highway driving, but when unbolted, could give you more droop, kind of like buggy springs, but you can't do buggies too well without moving the springs under the framrails. I probably need to explain a little more, but let me know.

I can not make any of it out from the pictures. Where is the original hook up? where does all the new stuff hook to the frame? It sounds interesting could you explain it a little more for me thanks.

Ya I cant make much of it out. But if thats the rear spring, witht he shackle on the rear eye, the shim is backwards ;p
Label it a bit better, hard to make it out. And is this for a post mount or box mount setup??

The shim is not backwards. If you have a non-cv drive shaft then the t-case and the axle need to be parallel so the u-joints work right. Here is a good drawing to show you what I mean.

I had to add the shim so that my yoke pointed down more. It looks strange but the vibs are almost gone. I am taking it in tomorrow to get the angles check proffesionally so I can bring closure to this vib problem :D .

On a post mount set up the shackle flip is pretty simple as long as your springs are either flat or long enough. Mine came this way from the PO. With new or reman springs they need only to be long enough to not flip back up. You can do a chevy spring set up on the post mount wag, leave them on top and still get 3"-4" of lift without messing up the pinion angle.

OK, i am working on CADing it up so it is a little easier to understand. How long are chevy springs vs. the jeep springs?
I gave the spring shop my post to post #'s and the springs came back (with no weight on them) at about 1 1/2" shorter than the post to post #'s. Here are the part # pic's.

Any decent spring shop should be able to either get these or make what you need.
P.S. If you need a part cut try sending me an ACAD file, I have a CNC plasma cutter at my disposal.

OK, this is on the rear axle with a post spring mount. The idea is to use a piece of pipe with an ID the same as the Jeep shackle end (1.75?) and weld that to a piece of square that is 2.5" wide not sure on height yet. Then on the square, just a little ways forward a piece of strap 2" wide? would be welded on either side so that the stock shackle could slide into it and then attach to the spring, that way i can try to figure out where to locate the strap to get somewhere near the optimal 45º angle so there is plenty of movement forward and back. This would in turn allow the axle to droop farther down. Hope i am explaining this a little better. pic below.
btw, the bumpstop with angle is so that this 2 piece shackle has something to rest on.
Please keep in mind that this is still just a rough sketch, i will hopefully start working on it soon though.

OK, maybe I'm too tired to see it but I'm just not getting the two piece shackle set up. I'll look again in the am.
sorry, i don't think i am explaining it very well. Don't worry about it though guys, i am gonna work on it before too long and then i will take lots of pics and stuff for ya.

Gah, dont know what I was thinking about the shim. Not sure why I thought it was backwards. Hate it when I do that.

I'm totally seein it. It's funny because I had a very similar idea a while ago and my drafting looked kinda similar, but none of my friends could see it either.

AHA!!
I just saw it!
Sooo..few questions:
1: is there gona be any sorta bumper there? because on a bumpy dirt road that would cause a VERY ruff ride.
2: Where would the bolt go to hold it in place on the street?
Looks like a cool concept tho. Look forward to picts.

How much lift is this nifty gadget supposed to provide? Would this match up to an SOA in the front? Would it match up to a set of Rusty's 4 inch springs that are about 6 inches too long for us post mount guys?

1.Yes, i was thinking of using a poly bumpstop.
2.Not sure yet, but i will figure something out.
Gwamp - it could surely be modified to allow you to use the Rusty 4" springs.

Here's an idea for getting it to lock out on the street.
Fab up some thick plates that could be welded on either side of the bumpstop (the lateral sides..not the front and rear sides) so that the *new* shackle piece would sit in between them at compression and would slide down (and out from in between them) at droop. The bottom edges could be flared out a little so that they would *catch* the shackle as it moved up (from the drooped position) and *funnel* it into the correct position.
Then drill a hole right through the new plates and the straps so that you can throw a pin in there. If you get the tolerances close enough...there will be zero lateral play whether the bolt is there or not and the bolt will only act as a lockout device to ensure you don't activate the extra droop while you are driving down the road :0 .
It all makes perfect sense in my head...how bout yours?
I wish I could use my hands to explain it tongue.gif
Yeah, i was kinda thinking along those lines, or use a J hook to go from the bumpstop to the square tube. I like your idea though.
