I know that this is a often spoke about topic but I have searched the archives and couldn't get all my questions answered. I know I can swap the NP208 for my NP229.
1) The floor mounted shifter will become my only shifter correct? I then can remove all vacuum switch assembly?
2) How is 2wd, 4hi, & 4lo selected? Will I have to stop the vehicle first before changing gears? Transmission in drive? Neutral?
3) What mods to driveshaft must I do? Any others for better reliability?
4) Any other modifications needed?
5) Where can I purchase a reliable rebuilt unit?
TIA.

I just did the swap a few months back and one thing that will save you money will be to use a rear drive shaft from a later Wag or Cherokee that came with the QT case. It was a direct fit with the 208 case. I since sold the wag so I can't remember exactly how it shifted.

My 208 has no vacuum attached so you should be able to remove the switch., and only has one shift lever.

Shift pattern from floor pulling lever UP; 2H - 4H - N - 4L
2H to 4H (Hubs engaged)can be done while moving slow, 4H to 4L its best to stop in Drive, brakes on and turn engine off then shift to 4L. Reverse this when going from 4L to 4H. Owners manual says this can be done at 2-3 mph in Neutral, but mine always grinds and wont engage.
For 2WD you will need free wheeling hubs on the front axle unlocked.
Sorry, cant answer your other Q's

and here swap (http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=002259&p=)
There are a few more threads available on this issue but these cover just about everything, its a very straight forward procedure.
