Just discoverd that my charcoal canister has a small amount of gas leaking from the bottom. Should I replace the unit or does this mean it needs to be emptied/cleaned?

It means the filter in the bottom of the evap can(charcoal canister) is saturated and needs to be replaced.

Hummm, never seen that?

It means that gas is coming into the canister?

why ? (dumb question! but curious)

the onnly time gas went into the canister was from the gas tank vent going up Imogene..... because of high temp and low atmospheric pressure.... so we disconnect the gas tank vent.... gas burp and that was it

the bottom filter can be replaced.

Is the canister actually required? When I recently got my 85 GW, it didn't have one. The vacuum hoses that were supposed to go there were just plugged up...

This engine was real bad!

I just recently had a problem with my motorcraft 2150 sucking in charcoal from that canister and clogging my jets! it took me a long time to figure out what was going on. so it is disconected now. but I will have to replace it to pass smog! does anybody know if you can still buy that part from jeep? I would hate to put a used one in and have the same problem. it has been a major pain just to figure out what has been clogging my carb.

Thing, you can solve that problem by simply putting a gas filter in line between the carb and the canister. no more stuff into the carb!!

Isn't the job of the canister to deal with gas coming back from the carb to the gas tank or am I completely mixed up?

The charcoal canister is there to absorb fuel vapor from the carb bowl and fuel tank so that none is vented into the atmosphere. When the motor is running that stored vapor is drawn into the motor and burned. If liquid fuel is dripping out of the bottom the canister is effectively ruined as the charcoal is shot. Here in Ca as long as the system passes a visual inspection meaning all the parts are there and connected it will pass (maybe not if fuel is dripping out of it though :D ). There is not testing of the system.

If yours is leaking fuel then it may be coming from the bowl vent. I believe that on all the canistor systems no matter what the year there is a liquid/vapor separator on the bowl vent. It may be plumbed in to include the fuel tank vent also - sorry I am going on whats left of my memory here. Sounds like either yours is missing or not working. I suspect you would have to stop the fuel getting into the canistor but after it "dries" up some that your system - while not functioning as well as it should - will not stop you from passing emissions testing.

Of course leaking fuel is always a bad thing as nobody wants to have a FSJ roast.

I don't have the diagram in front of me, but the system runs off of vacuum, so I believe that it would be pulling the fumes into the engine.

OK, sounds logical. On top of the canister are 3 tubes: #1 is labled Carb, #2 Tank, #3 Purge. After my engine rebuild 1500 miles ago, the purge line was not hooked up and I plugged it. Should I hook it up to a vacum source?

the purge goes to the air filter snorkel in 74.... so the fume are sucked in the air

i do not have a fuel bowl vent (2100)
