View Full Version : Quatratrac fluid

I know this must have been asked before but i can't find it. What should the fluid in my Q-trac look like. Its a clearish brown with a ATF consistancy in mine. Is this right. I ask because the PO put ATF in the PS and he said just before he parked it he had a new chain put in. I know this was done cause I do have the paperwork. I read somewhere to use TSL-1 fluid in the x-fer case. If this is true where can I get it? I have heard it is expensive, how much is it? What about the low range unit, what does it take? how often should I change the fluid?
Thanks

The QT takes special fluid that is only found at your local Jeep deler. It retails between $9 and $10! The Low range uses the same.

I think I read somewhere about Crown making it for less than OEM jeep stuff. Is this true, where can it be had? How much fluid does it take to fill the x-fer and reduction unit? is it 10 bucks a quart?
Thnaks for the help

Doh! No, that's the quadratic equation!

I just installed my chain this weekend and it takes about 2 quarts for thre t case. my more than half for the low range unit.
It costed $11.00 a quart at the jeep dealer.
I looked hi and low and thats the only place that has it.

It takes 2 and a half qts if you have a low range and it cost $9.31 a quart here. I also looked and could not find what you are looking for. This is why everyone wants to go with the part time so we can run straight ATF.

I have never even drove mine yet but i would think the full time 4x4 would be a great advantage. It ices up here in arkansas at least once or twice during the winter, and I like the idea of not having to shift in and out of 4wd when I hit a dry spot. The q-trac does have a limited slip device doesn't it, sending the power to the axle with the MOST grip right? I am still learning about full timer systems, my other 3 jeeps are Dana 20 and my scout's got a dana 18 (soon to be a 20 with a t18 when the weather gets cool enough for me to get out and do it). I love driving my 79 J-10, which is to be out of commision while I do the rear main seal. Oh yeah did I mention (if anyone cares) all my jeeps are 79s. Two CJ5s, a J-10 and my Wagoneer.

The Q trac has a limited slip in there. I works great on those conditions where you cant stop to lock it in 4wd. Thats why I bought it. I friend had a 79 Waggy also and we would go to the ski resorts and you cant stop to LOCK your case since the bozos behind you will slide right in to you.

the BW Q trac has a clutch pack limited slip in its center differential.it doesnt really send power to the axle with the most grip, but rather it limits the amount of power that would otherwise simply spin thru an open center diff to the axle with the least grip.
as others have said, when the clutches are in good shape, and the prper fluid is used, the system works very well and was really ahead of its time in 1973.(or was it 74?).anyway,its a great setup for snow/winter driving since you can leave it in 4x without worrying about driveline bind if you hit a dry spot. just get in and drive, wiothout worry.
last and not least, what model 18 is in your scout? does it use the same texas pattern as the jeep 18 and 20? if so,is it the later large bore version? if so,are yu interested in selling it? im about to replace the 904/dana 300 in my GW with a t18/dana 20 and would love to replace the 20 with a 2.49 low range, twin stick 18.
your thoughts?

I never paid attention to what the bolt pattern was. My donor scout with the T-18/dana 20 combo is all bolted together, and I just gonna swap. I already have the T90/Dana 18 pulled. I would sell it but I'm planning on keeping it for posterity sake. I never know when one or the other will go out. I am going to put the Teraflex gears in the 20. Anyone have any idea how much they cost? Are you talking about putting the twin sticks on a 20, or doing a dual x-fer setup? I just woke up maybe I am just confused. I love the thought of the tera 3.15 xfer gears, 6.05 first t-18, and I have 5.38s in the scout now! gonna be great with that 80 horse motor!!
Another quick question. My 20 on of my CJs has a 2wd lo. It is all stock, in between N and 4 lo, it will work in 2 lo. Anyone else do this. I know my J-10 won't do it with that U xfer case shifter pattern will it?

I think I saw something about it in an off road mag awhile back. Where is it and when. If the J-10 is fixed I can go just for the hell of it. I don't take the J-10 on more than just creek beds and dirt roads. It has a real soft paintjob. Weeds will scratch it. My CJ and eventually my Wagoneer are my off road jeeps. Oh yeah I know of a 4 door Cherokee(looks like a 77, 78) for sale around here for 1400. Straight body, no rust that I saw. I never see 2 doors let alone a 4 door.

turbo,
ive done the 2lo thing with a cj dana 20. a friend of mine was in a mudhole one time with only his rear wheels spinning-thats how we discovered it. the way the U pattern shifter moves the rods with a dana 20 in a full size jeep,i dont think that it will work.bummer. i am about to put a t18 and dana 20 into my GW, ive got another dana 20 that im gonna tear apart and figure out how to modify it to work with a twin stick shifter.im pretty spoiled now by my dana 300,and really hate to give up .61 of the low range, and the twin stick shifter.i think its a good sacrifice since in granny first, low range, the crawl ratio is still better than it is now with the 904 and 300,even tho the 20 does have a higher low range .ill be happy if i can figure out how to make the twin sticks work. i like the 6.39 to 1 first, and the idea of not having to carry gallons of spare auto tranny fluid in case i get water in the d*** thing.i love the water, but autos hate it. does your scout 18 xfer have twin sticks allready? i thought that all of them had it,i know the jeep version does. i think that would be really cool-id ge back .49 of my low range, have the twin stick, and id just need to find an offset rear diff that would hold up to my abuse, and id get ALOT more ground clearance over the big round amc 20 rear end.
i wonder if my motor make 80 horsies? http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif prolly not... so i agree with your train of thought!

Yeah the scout 18 has twin sticks. I don't see why a twin stick arrangement would be a problem with a 20. It has one rod shift for HI/LO and one for 2/4. If you take the one stick out, you can move the two by hand. It would seem one would just have to make a new shifter bracket and sticks. i don't know for sure or really at all.
Scottie - What is with your snorkle setup. I was going to make one out of PVC and run my diff. vents into it and my intake for my onboard air/Pressure washer. How did you make yours or did you buy it?

yeah-it looks to me to be possible as well.although,my 300 has a high-neutral-low for frnt output, and H-N-L for rear output, and it looks from the internals that the 20 is the same way.on both cases 4lo is bth rods all the way out(front and rear in low),and 4 high is both rods all the way in(front and rear in high) 2wd is one the right rod out alittel, left one all the eay back(rear in high, front in neutral).
anyway,i sent you some email on snorkels. id make a seperate one for vents, and you can prolly hook your air to the air cleaner.a friend of mine is doing that in his xj.he using a samuri air cleaner and har a hose running from the a/c comp. to the sami air cleaner and it seems to work well.
let me knw if ya dont get my email,or need more info...

Scotty, I believe that the BW QT uses cones not clutch packs. This leads me to, can they be rebuilt? I wonder, can a machinist set the carrier (and cones) up in a lathe and using a toolpost grinder true up the friction surfaces. He may also need to remove a small amount from the small end of the cone so it doesn't "bottom out" (cause of original failure?). You may also need a shim for the preload springs.
"If we had a lathe...." (inside joke).
Your thoughts gang? Dean.

I'm in Fayetteville. I know about that snow and ice thing you were talking about!
Rocktober is on the 28th I think, I'll get back with the info. It's at Byrd's on the Mullberry, I tried to get some info as to if they were going to do just hardcore stuff, or if they were going to do trail rides, but the guys at Ozarks Off Road were not very helpfull. Also they wanted to sell me Rancho Add-a-leafs for $120 a pair!

dean,i could be wrong, but i think that the QT uses clutch packs, not cones.looking at the little diagram in the "4wd hardware" catalog seems to confirm this.i have heard of people rebuilding them with new clutches,so either which way i guess its possible to fix them.ive never really given it much thought. hopefully someone on the board thats actually had one apart can confirm?

Me and RB had mine apart not to long ago and they have cones. We tried the theory of adding another shim and it did not work so well. We ended up making a good one from two bad ones.
