Well I got tired tooling around in the XJ so I went and undid my TFI fisco.
Pulled the eletronic dist., box, plug wires, regapped the plugs, replaced points dist., plug wires, hooked up the battery. Turned it over and nothing but RRRRR-RRRRR-RRRRR.
When I pulled the plugs they were quite black. I attributed this to subjecting them to lots of turning over and no running.
I checked the wiring, it looked right. I think I need to check to see if I am getting power to the coil. I am getting fuel as I can begin to smell it after a while.
It was running well before I tried to change stuff. :( But I am enjoying my learning experience, as frustrating as it is.
I am going to buy new plug tomorrow. I doubt that will help, but I will feel better,

If the plug tips are black, then it will have a hard time starting and running. This is carbon fouling, and it occured when the engine was running. A rich engine will feel smooth (if it runs) but is not good. It could also be too cold of a spark plug- stick with the stock spec.

If its too rich to fire, then you will small gas on the plug tip, but it will not be black (as there was no burning.)
Spark check is easy, just be careful.

ether will clean fouled plugs. sounds like you dont have juice to the coil. try hot wiring the coil. you should get another opinion on this, but, iirc 12v should be applied to the terminal that DOESNT have the lead to the dist.(been a long time since ive messed with points). 'nother thing to check is the point gap. good luck

It was running fine until I messed w/ it. I am going to buy new plugs, check to power to the coil, then bring #1 back to TDC, double check my firing order then see what happens. I think I have my dist all turned around, it was turned and replaced a few time in desparation.
Wish me luck.
