View Full Version : keep it or sell ?
Hello all, I can't decide what to do with my 86 GW. It needs paint , headliner replaced , rear end sagging, trannys leaking somewhere. The plus is body in good condition ,great deal on newer tires, very clean interior, engine runs very well, TFI upgrade, brakes and axle seals just replaced. Not sure if another project is something I want to start(lift kit, tires etc, etc) would like EFI upgrade also. I don't want to sound like a whinner, I know you guys have been here before, is this a never ending story?

I actually sold and bought Bushwood back. It's like dating - You're certain you want to break-up... then you just have to get back together.
This could be the start of why Jeeps are better than women...

Your dealing with a 15+ year old car, is it never ending , YES. Just like life
things wear, matanance needs to be done, ... If your gloal is not to be bothered
you can buy a never ending string of new cars for the reat of your life. Which
I am temped to do at times.

Amen. But by driving an antique, no-overdive, carbureted, dinosaur, I can maintain it in my driveway, and usually with only simple hand tools. I don't need a computer to tell me which sensor has a fault, or a little "check engine" light to remind me when to service.
It's a preference thing, I plan on driving my Chief until I can't drive anymore.(plus I'm allergic to car payments)

I bought my '89 about two years ago. After spending lots of time and $$$, I now realize that many of its parts are simply reaching the end of their service lives.
You can continue to replace the parts (as I have) but you have to understand that you are essentially buying a new car bit by bit at retail prices. Even if you do a lot of the work yourself and watch ebay like a hawk, it is a losing proposition.
There is also the problem of cascading failures. A frozen bolt on a worn-out water pump will lead you to places you never wanted to go. (Ask me how I know this.)
That said, if it's a hobby, keep it. If not, get rid of it.

Well, I looked at it this way. I can drive something else that is a little newer and completely stock and not be able to afford things like lifts or engine mods. Or I can buy a cheap FSJ have cheaper insurance and upgrade about 75% of the vehicle for a bit less than the other vehicles I was looking at. When things brake down (hasn't happened yet) then you upgrade.

i sold an 85 waggy, in similar condtion to yours, a couple of years ago to buy a new grand cherokee. i am now driving a 79 cherokee and my biggest regret of all time was selling my wag. i love my FS chero (the grand cherokee was too nice and sort of wimpy) but i just wasted a lot of money coming back to the same thing (basically). my guess is, if you are on this board, you are going to miss it when its gone and you'll be back...a little poorer, like me smile.gif
