Does it make traction go to the wheels that don't slip? That is, if my vehicle is resting on the passenger front and drivers rear and stuck, will it switch traction to drivers front and passenger rear so I can get free?

To answer your question, no. I'll email a little article I've come across explaining the fulltime 4 wheel drive systems- it'll answer your questions better than I can.

To quote from the '79 factory manual,
"Emergency Drive is a vacuum operatred control system which locks the front and rear wheel drive together resulting in undifferentiated four wheel drive. This results in a direct axle-to-axle connection which nullifys differential action. This feature allows the vehicle to be moved from a high centered condition, permits continued operation in the event of an axle or propeller shaft failure, and assists in maintaining traction on soft sand or mud,or on extremely icy surfaces." That says it all. In other words, the Emergency Drive effectively turns the quadratrac into a standard chain driven part-time transfer case.
