I just picked up a 4.0 head to swap onto my 258. It came with the valve cover and exhaust manifold.
The head supposedly has 105,000 miles on it so I figured I would have it checked out and get a 3 angle valve job before installing it on my newly rebult engine. Since I'm not an expert on cylinder heads are there any things I should know or look for before taking it to the machine shop? How much should I expect to pay for the 3 angle vavle job and are there any other things I should have done before its installed? Thanks

with those miles on it I would get it sufaced, tanked, new seals, new guides and valves ground. Unless you are doing port matching and polished runners, I wouldn't bother with the expense of the 3 angle valve job. Should run you about $20 per hole ($120)

Here's a couple articles you might want to read.

I agree with Stolen76 the 3 angle valve job is a way over rated option for a street motor.

to me the three angle valve job is worth it. For dependablity, not performance. A three angle job will line the seat up in the middle 1/3 of the valve face. A standard job of just grinding the valve and seat face moves the contact area down towords the thin edge of the valve maaking it prone to cracking.

After reading some of the articles it seems theres a bit of difference of opiniion when it comes to sealing the water jackets. Most mention high temp epoxy but the one article strongly recommends welding them shut at a cost of around $200. If thats the case I wont have enough cash for the 3 angle vavle job anyway.

there is a 3rd method. Have the head machined for either freeze plugs or pipe plugs. I like the pipe plugs because if you ever get the head done again they are easy to remove for cleaning out all the passages. The same shop that does the valves should be able to do it.
